English Group Subtopic: Reading (Passage: Thrilling Encounter, PP 13-15, Explore English 7, Longman Kenya) English Group

Core competences to be achieved Communication Imagination and creativity Digital literacy learning to learn

Objectives - TG Learners should be able to: Read the story fluently with focus on correct pronunciation of words. Demonstrate understanding of the story by retelling it to the class and answering comprehension questions. Use vocabulary related to football in their own sentences. Research on various careers in sports.

Pre-reading activity -TG To be done as group work. Divide the class into two groups. Guide them to come up with two football teams and role-play a football match.

Reading activity - TG Teacher’s instructions: Allow 5 minutes of silent reading Allow reading aloud by mixed-ability readers. The teacher to test comprehension of the passage by asking learners to retell the story in their own words. The teacher should correct accordingly.

New vocabularies - TG Learners to identify new words. They can use these words in sentences of their own both orally and in writing.

Comprehension questions - (CA) Just some samples Why do you think Ndege’s heart was beating fast as he prepared to take the penalty kick? Do you think Muniafu was right to be angry at his teammate for causing the penalty? (TG:The teacher to allow for whole class discussion and use this to teach values of teamwork, forgiveness, etc. (Learners to write their own answers after discussion)

Group discussion Have you ever found yourself shaking with fear like Muniafu? What happened to make you shake with fear? Tell the story to your group members. Pick the best story in your group and let your group leader to tell it to the class.

Research Research about a famous Kenyan sports personality you admire. (TG- Start with this video: https://youtube/dSQyQKRNeSA) Research about a famous Kenyan sports personality you admire. Write about him/her. Make a presentation to the class. (ICT- The teacher to encourage learners to use the Internet, newspapers etc to carry out the research. The teacher to use the opportunity to talk about careers in sports in general and nurture talent.)
