How can you support your child? Encourage your child to participate in any revision sessions held after school/during lunchtimes. Read anything and everything, but also question it. Developing good inference skills are key to success on both the Language & Literature GCSEs. Practise SPaG online. Read and discuss any revision materials produced by teachers. Talk about and discuss modules that have previously been studied. Watch any films/plays/TV programmes of literature texts we study. Ensure homework is completed. At GCSE, it will always be about pre-reading, consolidating knowledge, or extending knowledge.

Maths

The Mathematics Department The New Maths GCSE – an overview AQA Examination Board Two tiers – Foundation & Higher 10T1 & 10T2 study Higher tier 10C1 & 10C2 study Foundation tier Foundation grades 1-5, Higher grades 4-9 3 papers each 1.5 hours 1 non calculator and 2 calculator papers

The Mathematics Department The New Maths GCSE Increased content on both Foundation & Higher Significant emphasis now on problem solving Very important to show detailed workings All multi mark questions will award marks for intermediate calculations regardless of whether the final answer is correct.

The Mathematics Department Students will need: Scientific Calculator (recommend Casio FX-83 ) Geometry kit (protractor, compasses) Revision guide Extra support we offer www.MyMaths.co.uk question practice GCSE Statistics (enrichment) GCSE Further Maths in Year 11 (enrichment) Revision sessions

The Mathematics Department What we ask of you and your children Encourage you son/daughter to bring the correct equipment every day Ensure homeworks are fully completed Always ask your Maths teacher if there is anything you are unsure about Your final grade is a result of the effort you have made, NOT your “talent”.

Science

The Science Department Mr Callow (Head of Science) Dr Wilson (2nd in Science) Mrs Mayhead Mr Essien Mr Rahman

The Science Department From September 2016 we are now teaching the new AQA science syllabus. Your child will have elected to study either: Triple Science Leading to 3 GCSE qualifications in: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. or Combined Science Leading to 2 GCSEs in Science

The Science Department At a glance: Grades awarded will be 9 – 1 ‘Pass Grade’ = 4 to 5 The content has been made more rigorous. The Mathematical skills and content has been increased. Application of data and interpretation of results will test the higher grades. No coursework All the examinations are at the end of Year 11

The Science Department Required Practicals: Students will do a minimum of 12 required practicals, spread over the two years of study. These will be formally written up, reviewed and filed. 20% of Paper 2 will be questions on these practicals and the students understanding and application of them. Higher level questions will also contain experimental language. This increases the need for student presence and concentration during practical lessons.

The Science Department Triple Science Route 3 GCSEs Biology Paper 1 Chemistry Paper 1 Physics Paper 1 Biology Paper 2 Chemistry Paper 2 Physics Paper 2 GCSE Biology Awarded GCSE Chemistry Awarded GCSE Physics Awarded

The Science Department Combined Science Route (Trilogy) 2 GCSEs Biology Paper 1 Chemistry Paper 1 Physics Paper 1 Biology Paper 2 Chemistry Paper 2 Physics Paper 2 GCSE in Combined Science GCSE in Combined Science

- The Science Department Misconceptions: Both Combined and Triple Science Courses allow students the opportunity to study Science at A-Level. Triple Sciences only help to soften the jump to A-Level study. - Both Combined and Triple Science Courses allow students to sit HIGHER (Grades 3-9) and FOUNDATION (Grades 1-5). Therefore, students that struggle or excel in either route have options to help them find the right exam level for them.

The Science Department Assessment In most units students will sit topic tests and end of unit tests, on a regular basis. The results of these will be recorded on Go4Schools. At the end of Year 10 we intend for all of our students to sit the AQA Paper 1 exam in each subject. This will provide data to evaluate student progress and help inform planning, interventions, references and parental notifications.

How can you support your child? The Science Department How can you support your child? We will send out information regarding revision guides Students can revise also revise using websites such as BBCBitesize and S-Cool. Please encourage them to do so. Publishing companies, such as CGP, produce huge ranges of revision materials from flash cards to exam practice questions. Further Study Science is an extremely popular choice at A-Level and potentially will require a grade of 6/7+ (depending on provider)
