INSPECTIONS Property Management/Maintenance: Ensure annual inspection is up to date. Coordinate annual inspection w/vendors such as: Ace Fire Equipment or Safequip. Conduct quarterly inspections to assess for: Damage (dents, leaks, broken handle, etc.) Charge/pressure level (arrow must be in green zone) *NOTE: All staff should visually inspect fire extinguishers on a monthly basis within their immediate work place.

ACCESSIBILITY Ensure extinguishers are ALWAYS easily accessible & visible: Proper mounting w/sign: Use signs/labels to identify extinguishers! Never block access to an extinguisher!

MOUNTING Mount on wall using brackets or place inside wall cabinets. MAX 4 FEET (48”) Mount on wall using brackets or place inside wall cabinets. Consider painting wall cabinets to easily identify extinguishers. NFPA guidelines state that the distance from the floor to the top of the fire extinguisher to be no more than 5 feet… However, Federal ADA guidelines should be followed, which the max height of fire extinguishers is 48 inches. MINIMUM 4 INCHES

WHEN A FIRE IS DISCOVERED: EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN Call 9-1-1 (Fire Department): Never assume someone will call 911. Provide address, size of fire, injuries, etc. Activate Alarm, Grab EAP & Keys: If an alarm is not available, notify personnel verbally. The fire alarm is warning/communication to evacuate, don’t silence. If requested, provide essential keys, site map, etc. to Fire dept. Fight the Fire? If it is safe, you are trained & comfortable. Assist w/Evacuation: If safe, direct folks to emergency exits. LCs must assist children. For mobility impaired residents, advise for them to decide to go to nearest stairwell or shelter-in-place/limit smoke exposure. NOTE: If NOT safe to assist and/or you are not comfortable assisting, evacuate to a safe location. Evacuate the Building: Use nearest exit. Do NOT use elevators! If smoke exists: crawl/stay low. Test doors for heat before opening (If hot, don’t open & find alternative route.) Remain outside until emergency personnel announce that it is safe to re-enter. Assemble in Designated Area: Safe area 25+ feet away from building. Refer to property Emergency Action Plan.

AFTER A FIRE/EVACUATION Take Accountability of On-Site Staff Learning Centers – LCC must take accountability of staff and teachers must take accountability of students. Property Management - For major emergencies, take accountability of residents (use rent roll/contact list). Contact Supervisor & Property Manager. (Follow EAP) Learning Centers: Parents must be notified. LCC must create and communicate a plan. Document Property Damage w/Photos Complete Proper Documentation (Check w/Supervisor): Incident Report Property Loss Notice FC - First Report of Injury (employee injuries) ABRES – Employee Accident Report General Liability Incident Notice (non-employee injuries) Employees must NOT enter units if they smell smoke or hear the individual fire alarm. The exact severity and location of the fire is unknown Opening the door could intensify the fire. The alarm could have intentionally been set off in hopes to entrap the employee.
