PARTICULATES PROGRAM WP500 Laurent FORTI Particulates meeting CONCAWE - January 2003

WP500 - IFP Activities Vehicle selection and preparation Fuels and lubricant Equipment and set-up Test protocol Test schedule

Vehicle selection 4 Different engine and post-treatment technologies representative of EURO3 and may be EURO4 levels: Gasoline vehicles : Renault Mégane II 1.6 l coupe (IDI) Citroen C5 2l HPI - 143 HP (DI). Diesel vehicles : VW Golf TDI 1.9l - 100 HP Peugeot 307 2.0 l HDI - 110 HP Minimum mileage before test : 5000 km

Vehicle preparation Change of the lubricant - 500 km of conditioning period Road load setup Change of the fuel

Equipment - Dilution system Specific primary dilution system (IFP but equivalent to Dekati) Dilution outside the exhaust line to limit pressure pulse effect and gas temperature. Moreover, the probe can be entirely dismounted for cleaning.

Dilution Ratio with Dekati system GOLF TDI - No catalyst Large variations of the dilution ratio (6 to 20)

Dilution ratio with IFP system Peugeot 405 - No catalyst Less variations of the dilution ratio

Equipment - Material & Set-up Wet branch : - SMPS - DGI - LQ1 - DC (diffusion charger Matter Engineering) - CPC Dry branch : - ELPI after thermodenuder Set-up : Similar to the round robin set-up

Test protocol (Standard Particulate Protocol) Prior to the series of tests : Assessment of thermodesorber losses : Steady state 50 km/h, 3rd Gear - Dilution ratio set-up (10 minutes) and 120 km, 5th gear Sampling with all instrument in dry branch (ELPI, SMPS, CPC), then in wet branch 2 days by fuel (IFP constraints) 1st day : Cold NEDC Hot NEDC Artemis Urban and Road 2nd day : Steady state measurement (50 km/h and 120 km/h) Fuel change, vehicle conditioning, cold soak

Test protocol (Specific after-treatment systems) Particulate trap : Standard tests: Specific procedure to regenerate the trap before the series of tests (high speed and load) Specific tests: Measurements during a regeneration phase under steady state measurement (high speed and load) NOx Trap : Standard tests: High load running before conditioning the vehicle (before the 3 EUDC) to remove the sulphate from the NOx trap. Study of the regeneration strategy and measurement of particulate emissions during regeneration

Fuel order From the lower to the higher sulphur content Gasoline : G3 to G1 Diesel fuel : D5 to D2 One repeat for one fuel (G3 and D5)

Test schedule Start the 20th of January 1 week preliminary tests 2 weeks with GOLF TDI 2 weeks with Renault Megane 3 weeks with Peugeot 307 HDI 3 weeks with Citroen C5 HPI End : mid April
