Munters DH Systems for Freezer Applications Presented by: Mike Sadosky February 18, 2010

Freezer Terminology Process Freezer Any freezer where actual freezing of a product takes place. Spiral Freezer (0°f to -55°f) Plate/Blast Freezer (-45°f) Storage/Holding Freezer Any freezer where frozen product is stored prior to distribution. Storage Freezer (30°f to -25°f)

Condensation Control for Freezers Extends defrost cycle, increases production Eliminates icing on floor & conveyor Reduces ice buildup on evaporator coils, less maintenance costs Eliminates ice on downstream weighing machinery

Signs of Condensation Problems Ice on coils causes defrost Ice on product Ice forms on inlet and outlet of freezers

Typical Process Freezer Ice Buildup on evaporator coils Packaging Area (Upper Level) Product Flow Packaging Area Moisture Leakage (Lower Level) Product Flow Suction Side Of Freezer

Cooling Coil Performance 44 gr/lb 70°F 56 gr/lb

Winn-Dixie Ice Cream Plant Issues: Electronic Sensors In Carousel Freezer: Coated w/ ice and required manual cleaning every two hours. Freezer Maintained at -35°F BEFORE AFTER

The Munters Solution Eliminates infiltration load Example: If you have a -25 spiral freezer and plant ambient conditions of 75 F DB at 60% RH. Freezer inlets are 2’ x 4’ Using gr/hr / 7000 = (CFM) * (4.5) * (delta gr/lb) gr/hr / 7000 = (2,400 CFM) * (4.5) * (78.1 – 1.3) Lb / hr = 118.5 Positive Pressure in the freezer aids in product load

Process Freezer Benefits Reduction in defrost cycles in freezer Reduction in ice on inlets and outlets of conveyors More throughput Coils working more efficiently Able to stay in production

Notes Determine the infiltration load and product load Product load is more difficult to control—once the moisture enters the freezer, it’s there. Don’t promise “no defrost cycles” Research customer experience. Do they have better performance during the winter? What are their expectations?

Condensation Control for Freezer Storage Eliminates fog and condensation Eliminates slippery floors Improves worker safety Prevents mold growth Fewer mechanical and electrical failures

Freezer Storage Issues Ice forms at all openings To hold 40°F temperatures, coils must supply below freezing temperatures Product drying is not allowed Large infiltration load USDA is currently considering ice that could fall on product (sealed or unsealed) to be an issue that needs to be addressed

Freezer Storage Solution When Temperatures are between 28°F and 40°F Do moisture load calculation Keep room DP below coldest surface temp. Example, if they are using 30°F ammonia to cool the space for a 40°F room, room must be kept below a 30°F DP Look at recirculating air when possible (except during sanitation) When Temperatures are below 27°F: IceDry is a great solution. Determine the cause of the moisture load. If it isn’t product, try to handle at the source.

IceDry Eliminate De-Icing Expenses and Downtime Increase Productivity Prevent Slippery Floors Improve Worker Safety Eliminate Ice on Products and Packaging Reduce Defrost Requirements and Costs ICEDRY OPTIONS INCLUDE: 825 SCFM TSP’s up to +/- 3” w.g. Dew Points of 0.4 gr/lb @ 32°F or Less

Benefits Freezer Storage Freezer USDA compliance Prevention of frost and ice on doors and coils Removal of “latent” load on current temperature control equipment Freezer DH is installed inside the freezer and continues to dehumidify the air event when doors are shut Provides < -40°F DP discharge

Nordic Chicken -10 Freezer BEFORE Sept. 28, 2006 AFTER 6 weeks after startup Dec.1, 2006 IceDry 1400 installed over main door to loading dock

Thank You Munters can control condensation, frost, and ice build up in any/all freezers. Utilize RSM and AE’s for application support. Freezer Application Guide available on WebDH Questions?
