Settlement and Colonization Mr. Rosse

Big Ideas Mercantilism was essential for France and England French and English colonies rivalled in the trades New France needed more settlers for survival

North America by 1650 By 1635, European countries were claiming land throughout the world. On the Atlantic Coast of North America, the Dutch and the English had colonies.

English Colonies The “Thirteen Colonies” were originally a Dutch possession. By the late 1600s, the English gain possession of the “Thirteen Colonies”

French Settlement Champlain’s settlement at “Quebec” was not his first priority. The Company of Hundred Associates was required to bring settlers. They also needed to set up a form of government.

Think-Pair-Share Activity Why was the Company of Hundred Associates not worried about settlement?

Fur Trade was more profitable French settlement had failed in the past Not in the farming business

The Company of a Hundred Associates The company was originally profitable. Overtime, the company became a failure. The company lost its monopoly in 1660. They fell into bankruptcy (a state of financial ruin)

New France By 1635, only a few French lived in New France. The Company of a Hundred Associates had failed. Iroquois had more control of the fur trade than the Hurons.

Mercantilism In 1661, King Louis XIV was determined to make the colony strong and profitable. They need the colony to became a part of the French mercantile empire.

Think-Pair-Share Activity Why was mercantilism important to France?

Extremely profitable for France and England. Got products from the colonies and build it back in either France and England, then sold/traded in back to the colony/FNs at a higher price

Think-Pair-Share Activity How did mercantilism affect the relationship with the First Nations people?

The First Nations People were now paying higher cost. Gave an advantage to the Europeans. Began a tension between Europeans and the First Nations People.

The Triangle Trade The flow of raw materials and finished products within the French and English empires. New France needed to operate as a successful business venture for France.

In 1663, New France became a royal colony. The King of France sent 1100 soldiers which doubled the population. The Governor, Intendant, and the Bishop= The Council
