The Progressive Values of “EQUALITY” and “CONTROL”

During the Progressive era, what were some similarities between the women’s suffrage movement and the movement for African American equality?

2 levels of Progressivism: Social reformer: wanted to take a practical approach to improving the human condition, i.e. moderate suffragists like Carrie C. Catt and minority activists that would support Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta Compromise. Other examples? Social Controller: wanted to impose middle class standards on the poor and eliminate perceived causes to society’s problems, i.e. The Anti-Saloon League and immigration restrictions. Other examples?

2 levels cont’d… The social reformers were usually more moderate, whereas the social controllers were usually more radical. How do you think social controllers used anti-immigrant sentiment to their advantage?

Things that social controllers hated… Alcohol Religions other than Christianity Drugs Gambling Juvenile delinquency VICE!

Things that social controllers loved… WWI 18TH Amendment Harrison Narcotics Act The KKK ? Middle class values

End result: Progressive reform evolved into Progressive control, usually as a way to repress the poor and underprivileged. For more on this idea, see story of Jack Johnson on pg 604. EXTRA CREDIT: Watch the film, “Unforgivable Blackness, The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson”.
