Standards and Learning Outcomes For This Lesson HS-ESS3-1 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity. Learning Outcome Students will collaborate to form an explanation of where natural resources come from and why they are some important based on the evidence presented to them in the lecture.

Introduction to geology Using the Scientific Method to explain natural aspects of Earth. Studying to map Changes to Earth’s interior and surface Observing interactions between the atmosphere, water and rock, plate tectonics, and geological time.

Who Needs Geology? Supplying Things We Need The Earth provides the raw materials we need for almost all of the goods we use. The Earth has natural deposits of these raw materials. Coal, Petroleum. Nuclear Energy are deposited unevenly on earths surface. This presents conflicts to gain these resources (Gulf Wars of 1991 and 2003)

Who Needs Geology? How much of Earth’s Resources do we use? -17,000 lbs. of Energy resources per person in the United States For energy alone (Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Uranium). 40,000 lbs. per person in the U.S. For all non-energy resources ( sand, gravel, salt, cement, clay, iron, copper, lead, zinc etc.). This tractor weighs 60,000LBs imagine one of these per every one of the 320 Million people in the U.S.

Who Needs Geology? 60,000x320,000,000 = almost 20 Trillion Pounds Mount Everest weighs about 360 Trillion lbs At this rate it would only take America alone 18 Years to consume raw materials that equal the size of MT. Everest!!! Conclusion: We take a lot from the earth.

Who Needs Geology? Protecting the Environment With the consumption of this much raw material from the earth, it is easy to see how the environment can be effected. Ex. Mining of coal releasing acid into water Nonrenewable sources (Petroleum, Coal, etc.)…earthquakes? Geologists work to find these materials, but they also work to find ways to prevent environmental destruction.

Who Needs Geology? Avoiding Geological Hazards Everyone is at risk of a geological hazard no matter where you live. Tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, Ex. Dec 26, 2004: The largest earthquake in 40 years took place off the coast in Indonesia. Caused a tsunami that killed thousands all over the world One of the worst disasters in recorded history 220,000 people died. Could the knowledge of Geology have reduced the death toll? (We will dive more into this in future chapters)

Who Needs geology? Mount Pinatubo’s Eruption 1991 Second largest eruption in the 20th century. Geologists successfully predicted the climax of the eruption. Tens of thousands of lives were saved.

Who Needs geology? Understanding Our Surroundings It is an innate human need to understand the world around us. Why does the earth look like it does? Who has traveled down the 15 by Temecula like you are going to San Diego? Have you noticed the rocks? Have you noticed the Santa Rosa Plateau is extremely flat from a distance?

Earths Systems July 19, 2013, the wide-angle camera on NASA's Cassini The Earth System or basically just planet earth is much different than the other planets in our solar system. We have tectonic forces, that create volcanoes, earthquakes, huge mountain ranges, hot springs, geysers, etc. Earth is a complex system just like our bodies, that depend on many different organs and structures, the earth depends on different systems These systems have shaped the Earth we see today. Physical Geology answers the simple, but very broad quation: How does the Earth Work?

Earth Systems The Systems: “Spheres” Atmosphere – Gases that envelop the Earth Hydrosphere – Water that cover Earth’s surface (2/3 of the surface) Biosphere – All living or once living material Geosphere – All rock and other inorganic material that makes up the bulk of the earth. This Class focuses on the Geosphere

Group Activity 1 White board per each group 1 Marker and Eraser Choose someone to write and someone to present Answer the Following Questions: Name at least ten raw materials that come from the earth Next to each raw material you listed add an everyday item that this raw material is found in Label if the raw material came from the Geosphere, Atmosphere, or Hydrosphere.
