Jesus had a number of friends and people who followed him around Palestine teaching his message. These were called the Disciples. There were 12 men in total. There was also a woman called Mary Magdalene.

The first two men to follow Jesus were called Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen. Jesus met them on the shores of the sea of Galilee as they were fishing. The third and forth men to follow Jesus were James and John Jesus met them as they were repairing a local fishing boat.

Saint Peter One of the most famous of the Disciples was the first man to follow Jesus: Simon. Jesus had a nickname for Simon which was Peter, meaning “my rock”. Peter later became the first person to build the first Church in Rome: Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

However, back then most Romans were Pagans (believed in more than one God) and did not agree with Peter and other Christians who believed in one God. So, just like they did to Jesus the Romans crucified Peter in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. His bones and relics are said to be buried underneath the altar in this Basilica.
