Presentation transcript:

1.WHAT IS AN ATOM everything is made of atoms Smallest part of an element that has all of properties of that element Very small, six sextillion in a drop of water Different kinds are listed on the periodic table

2.What is inside an atom Location In nucleus In cloud nn Subatomic particles called protons, neutrons and electrons. Are there smaller things? Yep! nn Location In nucleus In cloud

Example Lithium

3. How can you tell how many particles each atom has 3. How can you tell how many particles each atom has? Use Periodic Table Atomic Number (Z) is the number of protons (decides what atom it is) It is also the number of electrons for a neutral atom. Mass Number (A) is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons So A-Z=Neutrons(Round off atomic mass to get common mass number) Atomic Mass- the average mass of an elements atoms Ex) some Hydrogen atoms have more neutrons than others

For example, Fluorine has: 9 protons 9 electrons 10 neutrons most of the time (protons + neutrons = mass number
