Adams Presidency

12th Amendment Added to Constitution Passed in 1804 to fix this problem Established that the President and the Vice President should be voted on separately

Primary Problem: The French Jay’s Treaty- passed in 1794 established peace and trade between Britain and United States Treaty greatly angered the French and Democratic-Republicans D-R’s feared it favored aristocracy and Federalists As a result, the French began attacking American ships

XYZ Affair In an attempt to negotiate with the French, Adams sends US diplomats Charles Pickney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. Three French officials meet with US diplomats and ask for bribes in order to negotiate peace. In the US, the 3 French officials were known as X, Y, and Z. Americans felt incredibly insulted

Quasi-War As a result, the French and US engaged in the Quasi war American slogan: “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute.”

John Adams’ Reaction 1. Increases size of the American Navy 2. Passes Alien and Seditions Act Aliens and Seditions Act- Authorized the President to arrest citizens and deport immigrants who criticized the Federal Government

Democratic-Republican Reaction Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are greatly angered by both the Alien and Sedition Act and the Quasi War with France and draft the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions- States could nullify federal laws they felt were unconstitutional Nullify- To cancel or take out of effect

Put away your notes and take out a sheet of paper… What problem did we have after the Election of 1796? What did the 12th Amendment say? The incident in where the French greatly insulted the Americans when they demanded for bribes to negotiate peace was known as what? What were the Alien and Sedition Acts? How did James Madison and Thomas Jefferson respond to the Alien and Sedition Acts?

Take out a sheet of paper and respond to the following question… Should American citizens give up some personal liberties in exchange for additional security and safety? Why or Why not? Give two reasons for why or why not.
