Genre A type or category of literature or film marked by certain features or conventions. The three broadest categories include poetry, drama, and fiction. These general genres are often subdivided into more specific genres and subgenres. For instance, precise examples of genres might include murder mysteries, westerns, sonnets, lyric poetry, tragedies, epics, etc.

Nonfiction: Unbroken and Night Shaped by significant people and events in the writer’s character’s life and how these events/people affected the writer/character. Adds human elements to historical facts/eras Subgenres include autobiographies, biographies and memoirs. Autobiography: a writer’s account of his/her life told in first person POV Biography: an account of a person’s life written by another person based on research Memoir: a memory rendered in literature

Mystery: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- time & The Hound of the Baskervilles Strangeness or something unknown Solving a puzzling situation, event, or a crime Centers on someone investing something or searching for secret information

Fantasy The Golden Compass & The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Talking Animals or Objects Magical Powers Medieval or Mythical Elements

Science Fiction Genre Subgenres: dystopian literature, post-apocalyptic literature Dystopian literature shows a nightmarish image about what might happen to the world in the near future. Usually the main themes of dystopian works are rebellion, oppression, revolutions, wars, overpopulation, and disasters. Post-apocalyptic literature must ask three important questions: What could have been done to prevent the apocalypse?  What steps will humans have to take in order to reorganize and to rebuild? This question is not only the path to re-establishing civilization, but also the means to access common everyday necessities (i.e. food, potable water, electricity, etc.). What does the entire experience teach about humanity? How do we react in moments of extreme distress, and in those moments, what human values are most important to us?

Complete a book mark for each of the novels you read Be sure to use the correct genre Bring the bookmark to class to be submitted on the first day of school
