Richard Cavanagh Director, Special Programs Office National Institute of Standards and Technology Department of Commerce and Co-chair of the Interagency Working Group on Medical Imaging

Interagency Working Group on Medical Imaging - IWGMI Standardize Image Acquisition and Storage Apply Advanced Computation and Machine Learning to Medical Imaging Accelerate the Development and Translation of New, High Value Imaging Techniques Promote Best Practices in Medical Imaging This audience is probably already well aware of the interagency roadmap that was released in December. This is a very complete, but high level view opportunities that exist.

NIST Mission Promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. Take a minute to talk about why NIST is engaged in this effort -

NIST Strategy To accomplish our mission, we depend on Trust, NIST Core Values and Talented People In our Measurements In other’s Measurements In Technologies Across Sectors NIST is not a REGULATORY AGENCY

Cultivating Trust in Our Measurements NIST establishes the methods that assure physically meaningful measurements “Primary” measurements appeal directly to fundamental physical constants Field (clinical) measurements are traceably linked to primary standards to assure data are acquirable, usable, and physically meaningful Polyurethane foam of different density 100 mm Density standard for medical computed tomography NIST SRM 2088

Cultivating Trust in Others’ Measurements When doing quantitative imaging, 20% variation across a single manufacturer’s machines ISMRM Ad Hoc Committee for Standards in Quantitative MRI. "Comparison of T1 Measurement Using the ISMRM/NIST Phantom". Proceedings of the ISMRM 24th Meeting, #3290, Singapore, 2016.

Cultivating Trust in AI Technologies AI systems typically make decisions based on data-driven models created by machine learning. Inherent uncertainties need to be characterized and assessed through standardized approaches to assure the technology is safe and reliable. Evaluation protocols must be developed and new metrics are needed to provide quantitative support for standards including data, performance, interoperability, usability, security, and privacy. NIST cultivates trust in technology by developing and deploying standards, tests and metrics that make technology more secure, usable, interoperable and reliable, and by strengthening measurement science. In contrast with deterministic rule-based systems, where reliability and safety may be built in and proven by design, AI systems typically make decisions based on data-driven models created by machine learning. Inherent uncertainties need to be characterized and assessed through standardized approaches to assure the technology is safe and reliable. Evaluation protocols must be developed and new metrics are needed to provide quantitative support to a broad spectrum of standards including data, performance, interoperability, usability, security, and privacy.

Cultivating Trust Across Sectors Federal Government State/Local Government Healthcare Providers and Payers Academia Device and Pharmaceutical Industry Patients and advocates This figure, from the roadmap, is the federal sliced of the trust issue. Need to address the non-federal stakeholders.

NIST Core Values Perseverance Integrity Inclusivity Excellence Integrity and Excellence are self evident. Excellence

NIST Core Values Perseverance - We take the long view, planning the future with scientific knowledge and imagination to ensure continued impact and relevance for our stakeholders. Inclusivity - We work collaboratively to harness the diversity of people and ideas, both inside and outside of NIST, to attain the best solutions to multidisciplinary challenges.
