2nd Year Subject Choice What are the subjects How you can help out What your daughter(s) needs to consider

All Study Core Subjects EXAMINABLE Irish English Mathematics History   Geography (plus 4 choice subjects) NON EXAMINABLE Religious Education Wellbeing which covers:       Wellbeing Civic Social & Political Ed. (CSPE)       Social Political & Health Ed (SPHE)       Physical Education (PE)

Pick 6 Subjects in Order of Preference (We will try to get your daughter her top 4) Art Business Studies French German Home Economics Music Science

How you can help out You have a major role as a parent Let go of any old negative experiences, much has changed in terms of content and assessment Allow your daughter make the decisions as much as possible Trust her judgement, she knows what she likes best and is able for

Which subjects to keep

Careful Considerations Subjects that subdivide in 5th Year If  choose Business/ Science now,  they subdivide in 5th Year Science Biology Physics Chemistry Business Accounting

Careful Considerations Regarding Subjects Science – Many science/science related courses (especially honours degrees) require a science subject e.g. Nursing, Biological/Chemical Sciences 3rd Language (French or German in our case) – Unless students have a language exemption, 3rd language is a requirement for many colleges as a direct entry , General Entry Requirement e.g. UCC

3rd Language Required – General Entry Requirement Unless your daughter has an exemption, University College Cork, Galway, Dublin, Maynooth (NUI) require a 3rd language for direct General Entry in many courses Cadetship in Army, Air Corps, Cadetship in Navy, Unless you are already a college graduate

No 3rd Language General Entry Requirement Trinity College Dublin University of Limerick Dublin City University Institutes of Technology Post Leaving Certificate Courses Science, Nursing courses at NUI's e.g. UCC

University and Institute of Technology Matriculation (General Entry) Requirements NUI University: English, Irish, Maths, 3rd Language for most courses, e.g. UCC (not required if exempt) Institute of Technology: Maths, English or Irish Every college is different. Check college websites, www.ucc.ie, www.cit.ie undergraduate courses.

Keep in mind for your daughter The subjects needed for her future What subjects she enjoys/ feels she has an ability for What are the relevant/helpful subjects Which subjects has she consistently done well in What type of learner she is Is she getting a balance of subjects –practical/non practical or would she prefer more practical

What not to do Encourage her not choose subjects according to: Who is teaching the subject What friends are doing Amount of work or homework you think is involved in the subject Pressure from others

The safe bets As long as your daughter has: English Irish Maths Science 3rd Language – French/German She is covered for almost every course in country In saying that, don’t suggest keeping subjects that are too difficult, there are back door entry routes.

Info on-line www.qualifax.ie     Information on  subjects are needed for  courses, as well as information on all college courses www.careersportal.ie      Courses Section Junior Cert subjects www.curriculumonline.ie  or our school website      Information on curriculum content for Junior Cycle All Colleges/Universities/etc. have their own websites e.g. ucc.ie, cit.ie, ul.ie, etc.

Filling out the form Forms will be available to fill on-line after the mid-term break, date yet to be confirmed.  List subjects in order of choice 1-6, 1 being the subject your daughter is most interested in keeping on. The school will try to give your daughter her first 4. Contact Niamh Daly or Leona Hennessy at the school, 4631973 , if you have any queries.  We are also available to meet your daughter if she needs some support around the decision.
