Goals of the Goodling Institute Research Policy Professional Development

Goal: Research Goal: Develop a sound conceptual, interdisciplinary research base for guiding practice and policy. What we’ve done: Developed Goodling FL Research Agenda Became a centralized link for research in family literacy – research briefs, current research, research documents and reports and presented papers. Developed an annotated bibliography

Goal: Policy Goal: Provide family literacy leadership through through communication and collaborative action with professional organizations, state education departments, policy makers and the general public. What we’ve done: Support advocacy efforts on behalf of program providers Focus on dissemination of information

Family Literacy Certificate ed. psu Family Literacy Certificate ed.psu.edu/goodling-institute/certificate-programs/family-literacy-certificate Purpose: Provide an opportunity to enhance knowledge, skills, and credentials in the area of family literacy On-line 12-credit post-baccalaureate credit Offered through PSU’s World Campus Intended for early childhood educators, elementary teachers, counselors, family literacy teachers, staff, administrators, librarians, etc.

Family Literacy Certificate Four required courses: ADTED 456: Introduction to Family Literacy ADTED 457: Adult Literacy ADTED 458: Early Literacy Development ADTED 459: Interactive literacy and parent involvement: Supporting academic success

ADTED 456: Introduction to Family Literacy Introduces concept of family literacy Examines four traditional components of family literacy Examines professional development, collaboration and advocacy Examines diversity of families in programs Reviews importance of case management

ADTED 457: Adult Literacy Discusses adult literacy issues, research, theory, programming and instructional practices in the context of family literacy Examines the field of adult literacy Reviews key findings of adult literacy research Relates the field of adult literacy to family literacy goals

ADTED 458: Early Literacy Development Examines young children’s language and literacy development Focuses on the ways parents and staff support this development Reviews research about how children acquire language, reading, writing Impact of play and technology

ADTED 459: Interactive Literacy and parent involvement: Supporting academic success Identifies current research related to parent involvement and parent-child literacy activities Examines topics including: Perceptions of parent’s educational role School-home connection Fathers vs. mothers Interactive literacy activities Health literacy

ADTED 458: Early Literacy Development Sample Lesson – Vocabulary Development Learn about vocabulary development What does it mean? Impact of vocabulary on children’s reading skills How to improve vocabulary development Discuss vocabulary word gap Engage in class readings
