Play Participation Expectations Machine Pitch to Majors: Continuous batting order Free defensive substitution No kid should sit more than an inning at a time Machine Pitch Kids rotate through batting order one place per game Kids rotate through infield positions Play infield AND outfield each game Minors and Majors Kids must play six defensive outs at a minimum, or not legal game Expectation no kid sits more than two innings in the field Kids should get some opportunity to play infield Majors emphasize each kid playing some outfield 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League

Local Rules – Majors and Minors Free defensive substitution Continuous battering order Player needs to leave game due to illness, injury, etc, that player’s spot is skipped in the lineup – no automatic out Player may return to the lineup and bat in their original order Run limits 5 run innings (Minors only) Final inning is unlimited (Minors only) Final inning is declared by umpire in case of darkness May have more than one “final” declared inning Length of game No new innings after 2:05 on weekends, drop dead at 2:30 Workdays limited by light 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League
Local Rules – Majors and Minors Game time Roster Size May play a regular season game with 8 players No automatic out in the lineup Use player pool first Player pool can not pitch or catch Second, borrow an outfielder from the opposing team Player that made last out will be borrowed player Any player arriving after start of game goes to end of batting order Mercy Rule 10 run lead after 4 innings or 3.5 if home team ahead 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League
Local Rules – Machine Pitch Machines should be set at about 38 mph Umpiring Base coaches make calls at their respective bases Coach managing pitching machine makes calls at home/second Of course, be fair, it’s 7/8 year old baseball Coaches Coach manning pitch machine must NOT coach Two coaches in outfield, on opposite sides of second base Stay in the outfield !!! Batted ball into machine pitch safety circle Hits nothing, is a LIVE ball Hits machine or bucket or coach, batter gets first, runs advance if a FORCE 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League
Local Rules – Machine Pitch Thrown ball hits machine (etc) or lands in safety circle Dead ball and runners awarded base beyond one they are entitled Players Defensive team will have 10 players 4 outfielders, must be in outfield, no short fielders Pitches 6 pitched balls per batter or 3 swinging strikes (yes, batters strike out) Foul ball on 3rd strike extends pitches – 7th, 8th, 9th pitch etc. Baserunning No leads May not leave base until ball is batted If runner leaves early, must return to closest base as result of the batted play 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League
Local Rules – Machine Pitch Safety positioning All players must be at least 30 feet from home plate Pitcher must be even with machine, one foot inside safety circle 5 run rule per inning Unlimited Last Inning Overthrows Into outfield, play continues 1st and third base, infielder must return to infield to stop play Out of bounds, runners get one base beyond one they are entitled at the time of the throw 11/12/2018 South Maryland Little League
Local Rules – Machine Pitch Play is over when control is established This is when an infielder has control of baseball in the infield Outfielder running into the infield does NOT constitute control Any runners advancing may be tagged out But runner must return to base if not more than half way when infielder has control of ball No bunting Player arriving after start of game goes to end of batting order No new inning after 1 hour and 30 minutes.
