Land Bridge Hypothesis Humans traveled from Asia to America via land Crossed a land bridge over the Bering Strait which is located between Russia and Alaska Crossed over 15,000 years ago Most widely accepted theory

Coastal Migration Hypothesis Humans traveled from Asia by sea over the Pacific Ocean Crossed abut 15,000 years ago

Solutrean Hypothesis Humans came to America from Europe by land and by sea Came over 21,000 years ago Most recently introduced theory

The Olmec Emerged around 1500-1200 BC Built a complex trading network City center was Teotihuacan which is present day Mexico city Developed large villages with complex temples and pyramids

The Mayans Established around 200 AD Developed around southern Mexico and Latin America Remembered for their advanced engineering of huge temple pyramids

The Aztecs Established around 1150 AD Created empire through conquering neighboring cities Central city became known as Tenochtitlan which is now present day Mexico City Also famously used conquered people for sacrifice in religious ceremonies

Southeast Peoples Began during 700 AD-900 AD Many tribes settled around Mississippi River Grew beans and corn Largest tribe of the region is the Cherokee Greatly influenced European trade as Natives were introduced to horses and guns which changed travel and hunting

Great Plains Very nomadic- liked to move around Lifestyle centered around hunting buffalo which was native to the region Like the tribes of the southeast, the tribes of the Great Plains such as the Sioux became masterful hunters and travelers because of the horse

Northeastern Peoples Combined farming and fishing to survive the cold weather These tribes were first to encounter European settlers Two main groups: Algonquin and Iroquois Due to war within different tribes and with Europeans, the Iroquois formed the Iroquois Confederacy which was a political union These tribes generally lived in longhouses which were made of wood and other materials which existed in their environment

Northwest Peoples In order to survive the cold temperatures, these tribes relied on timber and fishing The Inuit tribe of Alaska built Igloos and wore parkas which were made out of hides from animals local to the region

Southwest Peoples To adjust to the warm, dry climate of the Southwest, tribes such as the Pueblo relied on adobe to make their houses Adobe- Mixture of sand, mud and clay. Very cool and durable in heat
