Crosscutting Concepts The Next Generation Science Standards Crosscutting Concepts

The Next Generation Science Standards – Short Review The NGSS are standards, or goals, that reflect what a student should know and be able to do—they do not dictate the manner or methods by which the standards are taught.

Basis for NGSS Next Generation Science Standards are based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Cross-Cutting Concepts, and Core Ideas

The Framework defines several guiding principles about the nature of learning science. Among these are: Children are born investigators. Understanding develops over time. Science and engineering require both knowledge and practice. All students should be provided with equitable opportunities to learn science and become engaged in science and engineering practices.
