How can you provide suggestions and recommendations? http://www.nj.gov/education/bilingual/resources/Title3ParentInvolvement.pdf

How can you become involved in the education of your children? Attend Back to School Night, Orientations, and meetings such as this one Check that homework is completed each night Ask their children to tell them about what they learned each day Keep in regular contact with a teacher or staff member about their child’s progress Ask teachers about any questions that arise Learn more about programs through before/after-school programs and the public library

Read and tell stories in your native language. Speak with your child’s class about their native country, a hobby, or their job Join the PTA Participate in classroom and school activities Chaperone events or field trips

How can you actively participate in helping your children learn English, achieve at high levels in the core academic subjects and meet state standards? Graduation Requirements Before your child enrolls in the 9th grade, you should find out what the specific graduation requirements are for your child's high school. Social Development and Health Be aware of your child's friends, get to know them, set limits and consequences Make sure your child has a clear understanding of negative peer pressure and maintaining healthy habits Offer your child encouragement and support Participate in sports and extracurricular activities

Science Encourage your child to read the science sections in newspapers and magazines and explain them to you Help your child conduct science experiments that are part of their schoolwork or a science fair project Encourage your child to explore different careers in science (e.g., archeologist, meteorologist, nurse, etc.)

Math Help your child see the range of careers in which math is essential (e.g., accountant, doctor, pharmacist, auto mechanic, etc.) Urge your child to persevere and understand that doing math takes time Ask your child to explain to you the new math concepts being taught in school; if she/he has difficulty doing this, talk to the teacher to see what can be done to help

Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Viewing Help your child choose books and other reading materials that go beyond the assigned reading list for school and that tap into her/his interests or hobbies Encourage your child to share a book he/she has read with friends or family and to start or join a book club at the public library or the school library Encourage and model reading for pleasure and share interesting tidbits from what you've read with your child
