LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering S. Makarov 05-03-2016

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering This is a part of drawing describing the magnet power leads coming from the magnet (left side) through soldered to the 2K, 5K, 50K intercepts, and then to the pins of vacuum vessel feedthrough flange (at 300K). The sections A-A, B-B, C-C, and Detail D show location and type of different wires in the flags slots and flange adapter. S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering The soldering procedure is identical for each flag (the 5K flag wires soldering will be shown in this presentation). We have 3 wires to be soldered at this location: SC wire and #12 solid square copper wire coming from the magnet, and #18 stranded copper wire coming from 50K flag. #12 solid copper wire SC wire #18 stranded wire S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering The soldering fixture consists of 2 aluminum blocks with 1 kW heaters and wire clamps. Wire clamps Aluminum block #1 Aluminum block #2 Thermocouple Copper pre-tinned flag with slot for wires Heaters S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering Now we clamp the flag with the slot facing up between two aluminum parts of soldering fixture using vise. S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering We assemble the wires in the flag slot. For this flag location (5K) the SC wire and #18 copper wire are installed on the bottom of slot, and #12 copper square copper wire is on the top. All wires are clamped down with 3 aluminum clamps (the top of the upper wire will stick up above the flag top surface by ~0.5-1 mm). S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering Now heaters to be connected to the power control box, power turned on, and in a couple of minutes the soldering fixture achieves 200-210 ⁰C, then power shall be turned off. S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering Now we are touching the upper wire with solder wire (we used Sn60Pb40 solder with a flux inside this wire). The wires and flag will be at ~195-215 ⁰C for ~ 15-20 sec, which is more than enough to complete soldering and brush off excess of flux or solder. S. Makarov 11/12/2018

LCLS-II SPQA Magnet Leads Soldering As I mentioned at the teleconference, we used a fan to cool down the fixture and flag (takes ~ 10-15 min before we can remove flag from the fixture and install the next one). S. Makarov 11/12/2018
