Quantitative Assessment of Pharmacological Reviews Pei-Ki Chow1*, Chun-Sen Hsu1, Wen-Ta Chiu1, Yee-Shuan Lee2 and Yuh-Shan Ho2# 1Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital 2Bibliometric Centre, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital Introduction Pharmacological Reviews ranked 1st in pharmacology & pharmacy with impact factor value of 23.825 defined by Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2001. The most cited article enlisted by Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia, U.S.A. was published in this journal in 1991. A bibliometric analysis was done to assess the quantitative performance of Pharmacological Reviews based on variables including document type, authorship, origin of authors and corresponding authors, publication and citation pattern. Methodology The data for this study were based on Science Citation Index (SCI) database on the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A. The research papers analysis were obtained upon literature search with defined Source Title: Pharmacological Reviews. Results and Discussion A total of 320 papers were published in Pharmacological Reviews with 56045 citations during the time span from 1982 to 2002. 91% were dominated by review, 2.8% article, 2.8% editorial material, 2.2% addition correction and 1.3% correction. Most papers were published by United States contributing about 48%. A detail list of number of authors, publication output and citation were shown in Figure 2 and it clearly indicated independent and small group were the most often method of collaboration. Annual publication output and CPP from 1982 to 2002 Publication output, citation and CPP of top 10 publishing countries Publication output, citation and CPP of publishing states in USA In-: International collaboration, Na-: National collaboration, No-: Independent, P: Publication, C: Citation, CPP: Citation per publication Publication output and citation of various number of authors Conclusion The yearly production showed a progressive increment with a domination of small group collaboration. USA has dominated publication production and followed distantly by United Kingdom where the seven major industrial countries still composed majority of the total production. ‘Moncada, S., Palmer, R.M.J. and Higgs, E.A. (1991), Nitric-oxide - hysiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. Pharmacological Reviews, 43 (2), 109-142.’ was the most cited paper with 8676 times cited in the world. Moncada, S. was the most contributor to Pharmacological Reviews. Review paper of author cited more than 1500 times
