Standing Committee & Division Sunday Session November 2011 ANS exists for the sake of changing people for the better: Members and Society!

Meeting Agenda: 4 Topics 1. President’s opening remarks on leadership 4. Questions for ANS President 2. What our structure does for us 3. Team Activity

President’s Opening Remarks on Leadership Our Mission Our Structure Your Leadership

Our Mission The American Nuclear Society serves its members in their efforts to develop and safely apply nuclear science and technology for public benefit through knowledge exchange, professional development, and enhanced public understanding.

What Mission Means ANS has no bottom line (though we must remain solvent) We have a synthesis, a combination of bottom lines regarding our performance We want to have a positive effect on our members We want a positive effect on society For the good of all

Our Structure Professional Divisions Standing Committees ANS Staff

Leadership Take a group of “volunteers” with limited staff support and make something happen Need you to create “wants” Create a record of performance

What Our Structure Does for Us Standing Committees Divisions Board Staff

Standing Committees Chair appointed yearly by the President Policy drivers in the Society Consistency in the Society Could be leveraged better by the Divisions, WG, TG Steady hand of tradition Committee members’ needs: Welcomed and included Clear assignments Linkage to the mission

Professional Divisions and Working Groups and Technical Groups Self selected Technical drivers of the Society Consistency in providing a professional home Could be leveraged better for products Division members’ needs: Welcomed and included Professional Development Linkage to “two” missions

Board of Directors By law, ANS (as a not-for-profit organization) must be governed by a Board of Directors. Members have an obligation to ensure that the best interests of ANS are served. The Board (by law) is the governing body of the organization. Members must refrain from acting on personal or special interests.

Staff Hired by the Executive Director Support the mission of the Society Consistency in providing support to ANS mission Many diverse functions Staff members’ needs: To be thanked Clear things to support Linkage to “two” missions

Team Activity Who are you? Two questions (Y/N) per leader The name of a Division or Committee or TG or WG will be placed on your back Interact with the other leaders to find out what’s on your back and take that seat Who are you? Two questions (Y/N) per leader Move and be active! Then take on that role

What do you want to be remembered for as Chair? Take-aways In your leadership role, what will you be teaching/mentoring today/this week? Create a record of performance (performance is the only thing that will encourage members to trust and support you.) One member does well, does better, acknowledge that, others will challenge themselves. What do you want to be remembered for as Chair?

Questions for the President ANS exists for the sake of changing people for the better: Members and Society!

Go Forth and Lead! Then tell us what you do to be so effective.
