FCIE Annual Conference 2017 Agenda Activity Pre-Departure Programming Abroad Programming Post-Departure Programming Discussion FCIE Annual Conference 2017

What Does Your World Hold? Think about the last time you traveled... Did you engage in any form of cultural exchange? How have you shared stories of your travel with others? Through purposeful storytelling, how might you reflect more deeply on those stories while passing the benefits of the experience onto others? FCIE Annual Conference 2017

Pre-Departure: Miami Dade College Institution Description: Miami Dade College gives its students an “international perspective” that will prepare students for personal and professional success in an increasingly interconnected global community. The College offers international education programs in more than 30 countries and is working to provide its students abroad with enrichment opportunities that will propel them forward into their careers. Program Description: Starting Spring 2017, Rita Tybor designed and piloted a pre-departure toolkit for MDC students to prepare themselves for the rigors of travel abroad. FCIE Annual Conference 2017

Pre-Departure: Wellness Travel Tool Kit Description: This brochure-styled worksheet allows student to consider and list favorite resources and coping skills that can be embraced when travel becomes stressful. The brochure provides a format that can be developed by an individual or in a group setting. It can be customized with resources for each organization. A sample of the brochure-worksheet, as well as a PowerPoint template can be found in the conference documents at: http://bit.do/FCIE2017-resources FCIE Annual Conference 2017

What are some of the challenges you might encounter during your trip abroad? “Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.” - Alan Watts The Benefits of Travel What are some of the positive benefits of traveling? Some favorite coping tools Exercising Meditating Socializing Taking Photos Listening to Music Dancing Writing Reading

While Abroad: Reach the World Institution Description: Reach the World (RTW) partners with higher-education institutions and study abroad providers to allow volunteer travelers to share their journeys online with K- 12 classrooms in the United States. Program Description: RTW has begun expanding its traveler pool through campus partnerships, including Miami Dade College and Dartmouth College, by connecting students from these colleges with local K-12 classrooms. FCIE Annual Conference 2017

Our Secret Sauce: The Travelers Educators will learn how RTW leverages technology to connect travelers with classrooms, in order to help teachers provide the cultural context needed for their students to excel at learning a new language. FCIE Annual Conference 2017

After Abroad: Seminole State College Institution Description: Seminole State College is committed to global and multicultural education. Through its curricula, international activities and Travel Study programs, Seminole State hopes to increase students' and faculty members' awareness of and active participation in social, cultural, global and environmental matters and to develop responsible, well-informed global citizens. Program Description: Led by AnneLiese M. Busch, the Center for Global Engagement has become a leader in post-program data collection, allowing the Center to provide support for every student who wishes to study abroad. FCIE Annual Conference 2017

After Abroad: Seminole State College Re-entry Re-entry is the process of returning home after spending time abroad Students returning from study abroad experiences can expect that they will have a seamless transition, this is not always the case Students may have idealized home Some things may have changed People with whom they want to share the experiences they lived while abroad may not relate or appreciate them in the same manner Recognize the signs of reverse culture shock FCIE Annual Conference 2017

After Abroad: Seminole State College Reverse Culture Shock Missing the people, places and experiences you came to know while abroad Old habits versus newly acquired habits and skills Friends or acquaintances may not be interested in hearing about your experiences It’s hard to convey what the experience meant to you It takes time to readjust FCIE Annual Conference 2017

After Abroad: Seminole State College Reflection Relax & Reflect Organize opportunities for students to get together and reflect on their experience What did you enjoy? What did you learn about yourself? What surprised you? How was your life different while you were abroad? How did this experience change your perspective on the world and your academic and professional goals? Did your abroad experience fall short of, meet or exceed your expectations? FCIE Annual Conference 2017

After Abroad: Seminole State College Making Study Abroad Count Career plans and opportunities to incorporate the experience in a resume and interview Has your career path changed? FCIE Annual Conference 2017
