Kennedy’s 1000 days Ch 17 sec 2

I. Kennedy’s New Frontier Kennedy used the media to portray an image of himself and his family that they were young, attractive, and leading the country in a new direction. His wife Jackie was more culturally refined, and brought her love of the arts to the White House. http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2013/specials/jfk/camelot/jfk-10-495.jpg

I. Kennedy’s New Frontier Kennedy was popular, but he did not have Congressional support for some of his ideas. He tried to cut taxes to stimulate the economy, but Congress refused. He did take some executive action on problems, and he was able to get Congress to help economically distressed areas with job training and financial assistance. http://archive1.jfklibrary.org/JFKWHP/1961/Month%2005/Day%2001/JFKWHP-1961-05-01-B/JFKWHP-AR6550-A.jpg

I. Kennedy’s New Frontier When the Soviets put a man in space first, the country was embarrassed that they were so far behind the Soviets. This inspired Kennedy to pledge to put a man on the moon before the decade was over, and to expand the unmanned exploration of space. https://binged.it/2HCueof http://s3.amazonaws.com/rapgenius/uYVHorVCQeCBErDyqomP_space_race.jpg

II. The Warren Court Although Earl Warren did not have a positive track record on civil rights when he was in California, when he became Chief Justice that all changed. He led the court in the ruling on Brown v. Board of Education, and in the 1960s other rulings would expand civil rights as well. http://cdn.kapistatic.net/historyhop/images/people/earl-warren.jpg

II. The Warren Court They ruled on voting rights regarding district boundaries and population numbers in the districts. Expanded rights for people accused of crimes; required all police agencies to obtain search warrants, provide attorneys, and protection during police questioning. They also ruled that prayer in schools could not be teacher led, and daily Bible readings in schools ended. http://prisontime.org/files/2013/06/ernesto-miranda.jpg

III. The Kennedy Assassination The push for civil rights made Kennedy unpopular in the South, so he traveled to Dallas to boost his standing there. He drove in a convertible to try to connect with the people, which made him a target when the car drove past the Texas schoolbook depository building.

III. The Kennedy Assassination Two shots were fired, and within a few hours he was dead and Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president. The nation was shocked, and the sense of hope that people had for the future seemed to die with Kennedy. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/52/b3/d8/52b3d800b96893c626a349a76ceb57e1.jpg

III. The Kennedy Assassination Lee Harvey Oswald was caught within hours, and when he was being transferred two days later Jack Ruby shot him and killed him. A commission was called to investigate the assassination, and it was headed by Earl Warren. They ruled that Oswald acted alone, but there will always be questions and theories. http://www.backfirealley.com/images/jack-ruby-shoots-oswald.jpg

III. The Kennedy Assassination Jackie Kennedy wanted to cement John Kennedy’s legacy, so a funeral that was just as big as Lincoln’s was arranged. Although the accomplishments of Kennedy during his presidency may have been few, his death paved the way for more changes to be made in society that would be carried out by Lyndon Johnson https://ironingboardcollective.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/article-1126490-0064c0d30000044c-859_468x482.jpg
