What Is Sports Physical Therapy? Dr. Josh Funk, DPT, PRC, CSCS Owner of Rehab 2 Perform

Who Am I? Maryland Resident Multi-Sport Upbringing in a Competitive Household College and Professional Lacrosse Lifelong Athlete and Lifelong Learner Owner of Rehab 2 Perform Performance Physical Therapist

Sports Physical Therapy Sport- an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Physical Therapy- the treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery. To improve upon physical and psychological limitations that will allow athletes to perform at their peak and decrease their risk of future injury.

My Philosophy Traditional PT vs. Sports PT Pain Management vs. Optimal Function Individualization vs. Protocols Rehab vs. Performance Linear vs. Fluid

Client X 34 year old female Ex-College Athlete Previous Right Shoulder surgery and Left ACL surgery Complaints of Left anterior hip pain, Right achilles pain and Left knee pain Limited with her ability to lift weights, run and participate in recreational activity (soccer and softball) Recently divorced with young kids who are beginning athletics

Performance Model General to Specific Best Athletes are the Best at the Basics We Are A Lot Like a House School Curriculum

Assessment Big Picture Fluid Process Formal vs. Informal What Helps Guide Our Thought Process PRI SFMA Y Balance Hop Testing Combine Variables Sports Specific Movements Every Session, We Assess

Position Mobility Joint Position Relative Symmetry How Do Joints Move PRI Relative Symmetry Anterior-Posterior Left-Right Rotation

Movement How Well Do We Control Joints Motor Skill Stability- Control in the Presence of Change Motor Skill Fundamental Movement Patterns General Physical Preparation Starts Here

Performance “Athleticism” Over Emphasis Uncertain of our Accuracy Strength Speed Agility Aerobic Fitness Over Emphasis Uncertain of our Accuracy

Skill Task or Sports Specific More Specific More Specialized Context Motor Skill Endurance/Work Capacity Movement More Specific More Specialized Context

End Product Return to Sport Education and Empowerment Appreciation for Tendency Wolverine Confident Adaptable Resilient Ready for Any Situation
