Teacher Information This resource should be used to support Key Marginal pupils for whom you have completed a PLC. It is designed to be delivered as a teaching activity to a small group or individual in order to fill a gap in their understanding. There is no expectation to use the PowerPoint in its entirety. Choose the methods and resources that suit your school’s approach to place value, counting and calculation. Use of this resource should form part of normal, day-to-day teaching, as you would do with a guided teaching group. This teaching resource is based on the National Curriculum expectations for Key Stage 1, with a focus on the laser-sharp statements from the PiXL PLC.

Developing Resilience Skills Use this activity to help children develop their resilience skills before you begin the therapy. Have a small group of children stand in a circle and ask them to pass a hula-hoop around the circle. Discuss whether this was easy or hard. Then ask the children to stand in a circle whilst holding hands with one another. However, before the last pair connect hands place the hula-hoop over one arm. They need to now pass the hula-hoop around the circle without letting each others’ hands go. After a few attempts ask the children what made it difficult and discuss the ideas they came up with to solve any challenges. Did you try hard even when the challenge got a little trickier?

Teacher Information For this therapy children will need to have access to a range of practical maths equipment such as Numicon, number lines, base ten apparatus and 100 squares to assist them with their addition.
Using Counters to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers Counters or blocks, in fact any objects, can help us to add two 2-digit numbers. However, choose this resource when the numbers are not very large. Counting out large numbers takes a lot of time and may lead to errors. Adding Two 2-Digit Numbers Using Tens Frames Another option if the 2-digit numbers are not too large is to use a tens frame. 15 + 18 =? How many counters have you got altogether? 15 + 18 = 33
Using Numicon to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers Can you find the total of 28 + 14? We can add the tens first. 28 + 14 = + Now we can add the ones. 20 + 10 = 30 8 + 4 = 12 You could have split the 4 into 2 and 2 to make the final addition easier. 30 + 12 = 42

Using Base Ten Apparatus to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers Keep organised by using a tens and ones frame. 67 Tens Ones 43 + 24 = Add the ones first 3 + 4 = 7 Add the tens next 40 + 20 = 60 Add the two answers together 60 + 7 = 67

Teacher Information Number lines and a 100 square can be abstract and confusing for young children. Ensure children are confident using other concrete resources before moving onto either of these. Only extend to a number line or 100 square if appropriate.
Using a 100 Square to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers As the 100 square is in rows of ten, we can add on tens by jumping down a row for each ten. 93 73 + 20 = We jumped down two rows as 20 has 2 tens.
Using a 100 Square to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers For each unit we move forward one square. 52 + 21 = ? 73 52 + 21 = We jumped down two rows as 20 has 2 tens and moved forward 1 square for the ones.
Practise 69 Find the total of 27 + 42. 27 + 42 = Did you jump down 4 rows for each ten in 40 and move forward 2 squares for the ones in 42?
Using A Number Line to Add Two 2-Digit Numbers Find the total of 53 + 29. Add 20 to 53 first. Now add 9 ones to 73. 53 + 20 = 73 53 + 29 = 82

They are not intended to be completed all at once and ideally should be done in intervals of a few days after the therapy has been delivered. The challenge in the tasks is progressive.
