Serotonin By Carly and Marisol

What is it? Neurotransmitter Tryptophan derivative Also called 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) Cannot cross blood-brain barrier Central nervous system, digestive tract, blood platelets Functions in mood, emotion, sleep, and appetite Melatonin production

How it works: Vast neurochemical system Each serotonin neuron control thousands of targets Relays information Outside of brain: smooth muscle contraction Inside: mood, appetite, emotion, etc.

What it does Positive feedback Helps with digestive tract (Contraction) Helps migraines Relaxes muscles

Hypo-Secretion Too little results in: Depression Mood Disorders Appetite issues Imbalance linked to psychological issues Aggregation Drug use

Serotonin Syndrome Hyper-Secretion Drugs and alcohol (like cocaine) prevents absorption “High” effect Hallucinogenic effects Ecstasy and LSD
