Songhai Government Administration of Songhai was more centralized than that Mali. It was divided into 5 large provinces each with it’s own governor, army, and Islamic courts. Main source of income was tribute from provinces, produce from farms, and taxes on trade. Timbuktu was a center of learning. It had many universities with thousands of teachers.

Social Hierarchy They had a social hierarchy system close to a caste system. Hierarchy: King, Descendants of Songhai, Members of army and free people, ward captives and slaves.
