Overview of USDA Food Supply Food Supply Update Overview of USDA Food Supply

TEFAP The Emergency Food Assistance Program USDA administered program designed to provide food commodities to people in need while keeping agricultural markets balanced. Began in 1981 as a way of reducing food surpluses.

TEFAP Allocation We typically refer to TEFAP food as USDA food. This food is allocated to states based on economic indicators and poverty rates. Program typically uses food banks to move the product.

What Kind of Food is Available? Approx. 90 products available at any given time. Products based on: Preference Nutrition Market conditions

How we get USDA food USDA Entitlement USDA Bonus FFLC works with regional food banks and Oregon Food Bank to choose products that we want from the list of 90 available items. Attempt to create a balances mix of product with our budget. Balance cost of products with what is most desirable. USDA Bonus Items purchased by USDA to support agricultural markets. We have no say in what these items are. Its in our best interest as a network of foodbanks to accept as much of this product as possible so it continues to be offered.

Influx of USDA Bonus product Between Oct, 2018 and Dec 2019 we expect to see double the normal amount of USDA product. Chicken (whole) - frozen Chicken (drums) – frozen Pork Chops – frozen Ground Beef – frozen Hams – frozen Pork Loins – frozen Blueberries – frozen White rice – dry Mixed Fruit Cups – dry Tomato Sauce - canned Pork (chunked) – canned Peaches, Pears, Grapefruit, Apples – fresh Potatoes – fresh Beans – dry Kidney, lentil, great northern, pinto, split peas, navy

Possible Influx of Milk Nationally there is a large increase in USDA Bonus milk availability due to tariff offsets. OR is one of three states where dairies did not apply for federal subsidies which makes this unlikely. More info as situation develops

Steps to Help Move USDA Products FFLC’s hold time reduced to 4 weeks. FFLC willing to schedule deliveries. Let people take what they can use. Don’t restrict them on USDA products. Make extra pick ups from FFLC. Operate from a mindset of abundance vs scarcity.
