VENEZIA Manroop thandi

CARNevale di venezia The Carnival of Venice is held annually in the city of Venice and has up to three million spectators from around the world. The carnival is celebrated in the days leading up to Lent (a Christian holiday) typically in the months of January and February. The colorful carnival consists of masquerade balls, concerts, street performances, and a candle lit parade of boats. People roam the streets of Venice wearing masks and fancy dresses. This is an opportunity to relive Italy’s past and experience the traditional way people dressed in Italy back in the 13th century. The festival is truly mystical, entertaining, and a one in a life time experience that brings you into a new world.

The grand canal tour Grand Canal Tour Video (play until 3:04) The Grand Canal is the perfect place to go to while in Venice. The tour can be taken in a private boat, gondola, or a water taxi. On the relaxing ride you can spot some of Venice’s most famous buildings some in which date from the 13th to 18th century including churches and palaces. The tour passes some of Venice’s most visited tourist attractions like the Rialto Bridge, St Mark’s Square, and the Salute. Shaped in a S the canal is two and a half miles long and connects to many different canals and islands. Whether it’s with your special someone or your friends there’s nothing better than learning about Venice’s history while being able to see the surreal and elegant views of Venice.

St. Mark’s Basilica Located in Piazza San Marc, St. Mark’s Basilica is a master piece of art. St. Mark’s Basilica is known most popularly for it’s structural build inside and out! Also known as the Chiesa d’Oro (Church of Gold) the cathedral has a jaw dropping interior and it gives you a snippet of the background of Italian architecture. The cathedral displays some of Italy’s artwork and mosaics dating from hundreds of years ago. From the top of the cathedral you can see all over Venice. Although the church was built in the 11th century it still leaves people in awe after seeing the compilation of Byzantine, Roman, and Venetian architecture. This spot is a must in Venice because of the historical significance and also because of the intricate build.

FOODS FROM VENICE Risi e Bisi (rice and peas) is a simple yet famous dish that hails from Venice. The dish is traditionally made with rice and peas but in addition some recipes also include prosciutto. Moleche (fried soft shell crab) is a seasonal Venetian treat offered in spring and fall. The dish is made from soft shell crabs locally caught from the lagoon in Venice. The soft shell crab is fried and typically served in a salad or with polenta. Tiramisu is a classic Venetian dessert. It is a coffee flavored dessert layered with mascarpone and sponge cake topped with powdered chocolate. The delicate and rich cake can be found in restaurants all over Venice. Although Tiramisu does not have an English name it is widely known across Canada and the United States.
