How Do CAFO’s Land Apply Manure?

What is a CAFO? In the State of Indiana Animal Feeding Operations are permitted as Confined Feeding Facilities (CFO’s) or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s). The farm size determines whether or not an operation is labeled a CAFO.

What is Land Application? Utilizing manure from livestock operations on fields used to grow crops. Manure can be surface applied onto the soil or injected into the soil.

Why Land Apply Manure? Manure nutrients help build and maintain soil fertility Manure can also improve soil tilth, increase water-holding capacity, lessen wind and water erosion, improve aeration, and promote beneficial organisms
