Cosumnes Oaks High School Academic Planning for 2018-2019 Student Introduction: Share your experience picking classes the past 3 years.

Don’t be absent! Course selection for 2018-2019 will be held during advocacy on Tuesday, February 6th! Today you should begin planning which courses you will select for next year. As you go through this presentation, make notes of the core and elective options that are best for you.

Agenda: Fill out the pre-course selection worksheet in class today. After advocacy today, if you are unsure about your courses, speak to your current teacher about what he/she recommends REMINDER: You might need to apply or attend a special meeting for some programs

Choose your Required Courses Each student will be enrolled in 80 credits. *********************** In this example: Required credits=60 Elective credits=20 The next slides will guide you through selecting your courses in each subject category…

Mathematics The typical course sequence goes as follows: Math I Think about your math grades this year …What level do you qualify for? Math I Math II Applied Math Math III Problem Solving A Pre Calculus Stats/AP Stats Calculus B/C Calculus A/B

Math Selection Highlight or circle the course you are CURRENTLY in this year: Example: You took Math I this year…

Math Selection Then look at the options in the column below. These are your options for next year… Based on the grade you earned in your math class this year, select the appropriate course. For example, if you took Math I this year and earned an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ you should take Math II next year. *Suggestion: You might want to ask your math teacher for their input between now and Feb. 6th

Mathematics If you still have questions about your math placement for next year talk to your math teacher.

English You may choose: (highlight/circle one) English 10 –or– 10 Honors Note: Recommendations regarding Honors sign ups

World Language If you are currently enrolled in a World Language class and have earned a C or better, you can advance to the next level. Ex: You completed Spanish I this year with a ‘C’…enroll in Spanish II next year Spanish II Write this in the blank space provided If you have not started your World Language, it is recommended that you begin in the 10th grade with either: Spanish 1 –OR- Japanese 1

Science If you are currently in General Science choose: Biology If you are currently in Biology choose: (*based on your math level) Physiology (enrolling in Math II) Chemistry (enrolling in Math II) Physics (enrolling in Math II) AP Chemistry (enrolling in Math III) Note: Recommendations regarding AP sign ups

Social Science You may choose: (highlight/circle one) World History–or– AP World History Note: Recommendations regarding AP sign ups

What Is Advanced Placement (AP)? Advanced Placement or AP classes are college classes taught at the high school level. These courses are more challenging , academically rigorous, and require more homework/study time outside of school, but they are the best tool we have to prepare students for their college/career experience after high school. AP Classes for sophomores: AP World History AP Spanish AP Chemistry

Honors/Advanced Placement Program Questions to consider before you sign up for an Honors/AP course. Students should expect 2-6 hours of homework per week per Honors/AP class. Think about other weekly commitments that might limit your time to focus on multiple Honors/AP classes. What are your outside commitments? Do you play a sport? Are you a member of a school club or academy that takes time out of your day/week? What will your class schedule look like? While every effort is made to balance AP classes across terms, there is the potential that you will have a term with multiple Honors/AP classes that cannot be balanced due to scheduling conflicts. Are you prepared to complete the summer intro assignment? (most AP classes will have a summer intro assignment) If the answer to these questions is “yes”, what is your next step? Select the class on your course selection form (February 6th!) Pick up the textbook and summer intro assignment in May before leaving for summer break.

How To Choose Electives As a sophomore, you will be enrolled in 5-20 credits of electives If you are in an Academy or Pathway, choose those program electives If you are in a program (Band, AVID, Hype, etc), choose those as your electives After that, you can choose any of the electives that you qualify for and seem interesting to you!

10th grade Elective Options **A printable version of this document is available on the COHS website

How does course selection work this year?

Have you created your account? Do you remember your password? Student VUE… This year, you will input your course selection online in StudentVUE. You will access your StudentVUE account for two things: Check graduation progress by looking at your Graduation Summary (under Course History) Input your classes by going to the Course Request tab. Have you created your account? Do you remember your password?

Student VUE…

Getting Ready to Graduate… Have you met the requirements? Check your Student VUE Graduation Status.

Online Course Selection This year we will be using StudentVUE accounts for course selection. Students will fill out a paper copy of the course selection form in advocacy on February 6th and will then go online to input their courses. StudentVUE will be open for course selection input from February 6-Feburary 16. Students will have opportunities during advocacy, wolfpack hour, before school, after school, at lunch and at home to input their selections.

Final Thoughts: StudentVUE Review your grades and credits Verify that you can log on to the StudentVUE System so that you are ready for February 6th. Review your grades and credits Go over your Course History this week on StudentVUE to check your grades and to determine if you qualify for the courses you are interested in. AP/Honors Classes Select the AP/Honors course on your course selection sheet on February 6th. Questions or concerns? If you are worried about your graduation progress or the classes you need to be eligible for college, make an appointment to speak with your counselor! Talk to your current teachers about his/her recommendation for which class you should take in that subject. Sample Course Selection forms can be accessed from the Counseling page on the COHS website.
