LO To assess my understanding of ratio and proportion RAG Key Words: Reflect, Communicate, Explain, Justify 13/11/2018 Starter Activity Complete the ‘Heard the Word Grid.’ Are there any key words that you have learnt or have a better understanding of now than you did at the start of this unit of work?

Ratio and Proportion Grade F E D C B A I can use ratio to compare one amount to another. I can simplify a ratio. I can compare prices of products to find the ‘best buy.’ I can divide an amount into a given ratio. I can solve problems using ratio in appropriate situations . I can solve direct proportion problems. I can find formulae describing direct or inverse proportion and use them to solve problems.

Ratio Simplest Form Equivalent Direct Proportion Inverse Proportion Key Words / symbols Never heard before? Heard of but not sure what it means? Know what it means and can explain it in context Jot down your ideas here... Ratio Simplest Form Equivalent Direct Proportion Inverse Proportion

What is the ratio of strawberries to pears? Grade F Questions Answers & Working Out What is the ratio of strawberries to pears? Is this the same as the ratio of pears to strawberries? Why? Here is part of a recipe for a cake. Flour 600g Sugar 400g Jane uses 200g of sugar. How much flour does she need? How do you know? Print slides 2-10 two slides to a page.

Grade E Questions Answers and Working Out Write the ratio in its simplest form. How do you know when a ratio is in its simplest form? In a recipe for 6 people you need 120 g flour and 270 ml of milk. How much of each ingredient does a recipe for 2 people require? Here is a ratio 16 : 12

Grade D Questions Answers & Working Out A pile of sand has a weight of 60 kg. The sand is put into a small bag, a medium bag and a large bag in the ratio 2 : 3 : 7 Work out the weight of sand in each bag. small bag . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . kg medium bag . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . kg large bag . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . kg Look at the information below. Tin A Tin B 400g for 60p 500g for 70p Which tin is better value for money? How do you know?

Grade D Questions Answers & Working Out The ratio of yogurt to fruit puree used in a recipe is 5 : 2. If you have 24g of fruit puree, how much yogurt do you need? If you have 350g of yogurt, how much fruit puree do you need? Four scented candles cost £11.00 What will 9 scented candles cost? Explain fully how you worked this out.

Grade C Questions Answers & Working Out Here is a list of ingredients for making 18 mince pies. Elaine wants to make 45 mince pies. Elaine has:- 1 kg of butter 1 kg of flour 500 g of sugar 600 g of mincemeat 6 eggs Does Elaine have enough of each ingredient to make 45 mince pies? You must show clearly how you got your answer.

5 schools sent some students to a conference. Grade C Questions Answers & Working Out 5 schools sent some students to a conference. One of the schools sent both boys and girls. This school sent 16 boys. The ratio of the number of boys it sent to the number of girls it sent was 1 : 2 The other 4 schools sent only girls. Each of the 5 schools sent the same number of students. Work out the total number of students sent to the conference by these 5 schools.

Grade C Questions Answers & Working Out Pat and Julie share some money in the ratio 2 : 5 Julie gets £45 more than Pat. How much money did Pat get? Mrs Jennings shares £770 between her two sons, Pete and Tim. She shares the money in the ratio of her sons' ages. The combined age of her two sons is 66 years. Pete is 6 years younger than Tim. Work out how much money each son gets. You must show all your working.

Miles Kilometres 5 8 ? 20 36 Grade B Questions Answers & Working Out How do you go about finding the missing numbers in this table? Can you do it in a different way? The new model of an MP3 player holds1/6 more music than the previous model. The previous model holds 5000 tracks. How many tracks does the new model hold? The previous model cost £119.99 and the new model costs £144.99. Is this less than or greater than the proportional change to the number of tracks? Explain your answer. Miles Kilometres 5 8 ? 20 36

B grade 4 people can paint a fence in 3 hours. How long will it take 16 people to paint it? (Assume everyone works at the same rate.) A grade T is inversely proportional to d2 T = 160 when d = 8 Find the value of T when d = 0.5 y is directly proportional to x. When x = 600, y = 10 (a) Find a formula for y in terms of x.   (b) Calculate the value of y when x = 540 h is inversely proportional to the square of r. When r = 5, h = 3.4 Find the value of h when r = 8

Use the learning journey above to highlight the mathematical skills that you think you have learnt in this unit of work.
