What are the Main Components of the Grant Project? Marketing/Awareness Recruiting Curriculum Professional Development Web-Assisted/Blended Learning

Tech Ready SC Corporate Partners

What is Mechatronics? What is your definition? First, what is Industrial Maintenance or Industrial Systems or even Manufacturing Technology? What is your definition? Prospective student’s view? Janitor? Dirty manual process? Wrench Turner? Mom’s and Dad’s view? Low class Low pay You don’t want to do that…

Mechatronic Systems What is Mechatronics? Definition of Mechatronics Mechatronics should be defined as a way of thinking or method and not as a technology or product: "Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and processes" (From "Mechatronics, Electronics in products and processes" Bradley, Dawson et. al, Chapman and Hall, London 1991)

What is Mechatronics? How can we define Mechatronics? Mechatronics is much more than a simple combination of 3 technical fields it is a way of thinking how people and processes work together for which teamwork is essential Mechatronics Training must therefore address technical competence personal competence team competence in order to fulfill the demands placed by today’s mechatronic companies Mechanical Electronics Information Technologies Mechatronics Personal and team skills

What is Mechatronics? Mechatronics Systems Mechatronic Production Plant The production plant is characterized by automation on all levels. networking and computer integration low-cost automation with intelligent sensors electronic closed-loop controls free positioning of drives and PLCs The combination of these systems, how they work, how they communicate, and how people interface is Mechatronics

Why Mechatronics? Don’t take my word for it… Do a search on Google for: Why should we teach Mechatronics - You will get at least 54,000 results! - Here is one I find interesting: http://www.md.kth.se/MLC/didactical_approach.pdf This discusses an institute in Sweden that has taught Mechatronics for 25 years Do a search on Google for: Importance of Mechatronics - You will get at least 188,000 results! http://www.advancedmanufacturing.com/index.php?option=com_staticxt&staticfile=mechatronics.htm&Itemid=45 This is an article from November 2000 by Advanced Manufacturing that says this is a “Hot Career”

Electronic fuel injection Why Mechatronics? Mechatronic technology is everywhere... aerospace automotive chemical processing computers communications electronics health care machine tools others that involve mechanical, electronics systems, engineering with computer interface. Electronic fuel injection ABS-brake system Micro pumps (Medical) Video cameras Photocopiers

Recap of what is Mechatronics: Many of the technologies are already being taught The next step is to blend them together Accomplish this through project based assignments Have students work in teams to plan and complete the projects

Recap of why Mechatronics: More attractive to prospective students More attractive to Mom and Dad Provides more of what industry is looking for Allows you to blend more of your programs together to better leverage them Allows for more entry and exit points – career path
