I CAN… Analyze the significance of the Reconstruction Amendments Identify the impact that each Amendment has had on the United States

How did the Reconstruction Amendments impact America? Essential Question: How did the Reconstruction Amendments impact America?

The Reconstruction Amendments: http://study.com/academy/lesson/the-reconstruction-amendments- the-13th-14th-and-15th-amendments.html In your notes answer this question: What did the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments do for America?

13th Amendment Ratified in December, 1865. Abolished Slavery!

14th Amendment Ratified in July, 1868 Granted Citizenship!

15th Amendment Ratified in 1870. Gave African American MALES the right to vote Women’s rights groups were furious that they were not granted the vote!

Now we’re going to create a thesis statement about the Amendments! How to create a strong thesis statement: Focus your ideas into one or two sentences Present the topic of your paper clearly State your position about the topic

Lets Brainstorm! In your notes write your immediate reactions to this question, and give your reasons: Do you think the Reconstruction Amendments will solve all the problems for former slaves in the South? Why or why not?

Work with students and see why they things would have immediately changed and why not. List reasons on board. Then ask students to put together a thesis with you.

Rough Draft Together! Example: The Reconstruction Amendments failed to give freed slaves in the south immediate help. The Amendments left freedmen still with little access to education, or jobs. As a result, African Americans would be forced to continue to fight for their basic civil rights for decades to come. What kind of research would you need to do to finish this paper?

Black "Adjustment" in the South after 1865

What do you think this is a picture of? Sharecropping  A system of agriculture in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on the land.

Directions/Expectations: Quickly and quietly read the excerpt from your textbook on sharecropping! Be prepared to explain what sharecropping is to the class Sharecropping: A system of agriculture in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on the land.

Directions/Expectations: Using your drake voice Pick roles Read the “Sharecropping Contract” Answer the Guided Questions with your group

Closing Discussion: Did the textbook give an accurate portrayal of life under sharecropping? How did the contract expand or challenge the description in the textbook? Is sharecropping a good example of the success of the Reconstruction Amendments?
