DID Definition: • Disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality parts. This disruption may be observed by others, or reported by the patient. • Amnesia between parts of the personality. • The disturbance is not a normal part of broadly accepted cultural, religious practice, or part of the normal fantasy play of children. Shirley Mason, better known as Sybil, popularized the disorder in the 70s. Flora Rheta Schreiber's novel Sybil told a fictionalized version of Mason's story. The book stated that Mason had multiple personalities as a result of severe child sexual abuse at the hands of her mother. *We will be watching the movie Sybil in this unit.
