What does the word ‘Resilience’ mean to you ? Group Discussion Fact finding slide for your Group. Ideally a facilitated discussion May need to address the ‘image issue’ the word ‘resilience’ has How it has Almost become a ‘dirty word’ Needs to be fostered on individual, departmental and organizational level to be effective

Resilience – a few thoughts An ability Not just about individual effort Something to continually work towards Further Discussion An ability The ability of a substance to spring back into shape An ability to develop flexibility and adaptability in our thinking, daily and professional lives Not just about individual effort It involves those around you and the relationship you have Built be receiving help and helping others Something to work towards Not a defined permanent state.  Can be learned and developed

Consider Icebreaker here Pick something that is non-personal and does not require and vulnerability at this stage. Some examples could include……. Turn to the person beside you and tell them what the last holiday was that you went on and what was your favorite thing that you did OR Turn to the person beside you and tell them about your favorite Movie or TV show and why you like it.

Resilience Who has appeared resilient to you? Are their challenges to your resilience? Do you have or have you ever been taught strategies to increase you won resilience? Discussion and Further Fact Finding Divide into smaller Groups Pose some questions for facilitated discussion which could include the following now post Icebreaker…. Question - When you think of the ‘resilient’ people at your work or outside of work, what is it about them that makes them appear resilient to you? Question - What are the specific challenges and stressors that you face in the workplace? Question - What strategies are you currently using to cope with these stressors?

The Resilience Triad Small Group Discussion Personal Values What motivates you? What gives you energy? Do you celebrate your successes- no matter how small? What gives you a sense of purpose in life ? In particular what do you LOVE about what you do What are you GOOD at? Consider discussing IKIGAI concept here as per lesson plan/ Synopsis and WRaP Module on Meaning Making if you would like Workplace Values Do your values as discussed above align with your workplace’s values? If so, why? If not why, not? Does my workplace encourage innovation and change? If so, why If not, why not?

Ladder of Values Domain Rank (1-8) Health Family Fame Wealth Personal Development Friends Adventure Spirituality Ask Learners to rank the following Domains in order of importance to them

The Resilience Triad

Boundary Creation Facilitated Small group discussion points What does work life balance/integration mean to you? How do you try and create personal boundaries – ‘your own space’ at home? Is it possible to create boundaries/your own space at work? How do you think you could create a mental boundary between work and home before or after work? How contactable are you at work – phone, social media etc? Do you think your current level of contactibility effect your ability to concentrate at work or effects your fatigue levels at work or home?

Self Compassion Facilitated Small group discussion points Language – Self Talk What kind of language do you use when your colleague makes an medical error despite good work and their best effort? What kind of language do you use in your own mind when you make a similar error yourself. Perhaps we should talk to our selves , like we would talk to our best friend? Mindfulness See WRaP Modules on Mindfulness – An Introduction for further information However if you wish you could cover the basic concepts here if you wish. It is a big topic though and

The Resilience Triad

Self Awareness Help the learners Get to know themselves – like never before! What makes you most energized at work The people – patient and colleagues The tasks/procedures The referral processes The factors external to work? What makes you most stressed at work? What is your communication style? See WRaP Module on Communication for further detailed info. Do you have any techniques that you do to mitigate that stressful feeling? HALTS ( Hungry, Angry, Late , Tired, Stressed) Review your distractions – social media

Reflection Many models exist for reflective practice There will be further information on this in the WRaP Module on Reflective Practic. To deliver reflective practice here you will need at least 20-30 minutes to do it justice. Consider this in your lesson plan. I find a good model to start with is the ‘What, So What, What now’ model which can be obtained within the following link https://www.racp.edu.au/docs/default-source/resources/reflecting-on-reflection-deep-learning-or-medical-narcissism.pdf?sfvrsn=0
