R-6 Community Engagement Evaluation Project (CEEP) Oregon Health and Science University Center on Community Accessibility Principal Investigator: Charles E. Drum MICL Advisory Panel Meeting Nov. 18, 2009

Purpose: To establish the evidence basis for the Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) Methodology. The project uses a multi-site (3x OR, KS, MO) embedded case study design to assess the efficacy of CEI to increase access to health care for people with disabilities in the study sites.

Review of CEI Methodology Phase I- Town Hall Meeting Phase II- Community Infrastructure Meeting Phase III- Community Mobilization

Accomplishments: Bend, Oregon CEI Phases I-III completed in 2008 (Results previously reported to MICL Advisory Panel) Corvallis, Oregon CEI Phases I-III completed (Results previously reported to MICL Advisory Panel) Pendleton, Oregon CEI Phases I & II Emporia, Kansas CEI Phases I & II

Preliminary Findings Seven out of eight prioritized barriers addressed in Bend, Oregon Transportation, hospital accessibility and disability awareness are currently being addressed in Corvallis No other findings reported at this time

Emporia Prioritized Barriers Facility Access Exam rooms/tables at health care facilities are not effectively accessible for wheelchair users and/or people with mobility disabilities. Reception desks at health care facilities are not accessible for wheelchair users. Lack of enough designated van accessible spaces in parking lot.

Emporia Prioritized Barriers Communication and Attitudes Health care provider communicates with caregiver/family member instead of the patient during visits/treatment. Meaningful and direct communication Need for more in-depth knowledge about treating other conditions in conjunction with the disability

Emporia Prioritized Barriers Transportation Limited bus schedule Equipment sufficiency Transportation to out-of-town appointments

Next Steps: Analysis of individual and environmental measurements Complete Case Reports Follow-up with Pendleton, OR & Emporia, KS Begin planning CEI in second Kansas location| Begin planning CEI in Missouri Update Community Action Guide

Barriers: Establishing community partners Improving the follow-up process

Questions: How can we improve the follow-up piece? Who are other community development experts in the field we can contact?
