Determining the Use of Technology in World Food and Fiber Production

Next Generation Science / Common Core Standards Addressed! SL.11-12.5 Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. (HS-PS1-4) RST.11-12.9 Synthesize information from a range of sources (e.g., texts, experiments, simulations) into a coherent understanding of a process, phenomenon, or concept, resolving conflicting information when possible. (HS-LS3-1) HSS-IC.B.6 Evaluate reports based on data. (HS-LS2-6)

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Standards Addressed! PST.05.01. Apply computer and other technologies (e.g., robotics, CNC, UAS, etc.) to solve problems and increase the efficiency of AFNR systems. PST.05.03.02.c. Solve problems and evaluate changes in efficiency and create recommendations for the use of technologies in AFNR systems.

Bell Work! Explain agricultural technology. Describe technology as it relates to machinery, plants, and animals. Describe the role of computers in agriculture/horticulture. Explain precision farming and its impact on agriculture.

Interest Approach In groups of two or three students, come up with an invention for the future of agriculture. Provide an explanation for why it is needed and how it will be used in the agriculture industry. Specify advantages and disadvantages and be prepared to make a presentation to the rest of the class.

Technology Technology is the use of inventions in working and living.

Agricultural Technology Agricultural technology is the technology used in agriculture. Mostly based on science.

Benefits of Ag Technology Agricultural technology has resulted in many new ways of producing Food Clothing Shelter

Technology has brought about many advantages in agriculture. Technology makes work easier. Technology increases productivity. Technology increases the standard of living.

Mechanical Technology Mechanical technology is using physical force to do work. Devices are used to pull, push, or rotate objects.

Agriculture Science Gregor Mendel studied the heredity of peas. He concluded that traits are passed from one generation to another.

Mass Selection Mass selection is saving seed from the best plants. In the mid-1900s hybridization began.

Hybridization Hybridization involves cross-breeding plants to combine the highest quality traits from each breed.

Pest Control Pest control technology has improved the quality of many agriculture products. A pest is anything that causes injury to animals, plants, or property. Pests may include insects, diseases, or weeds.

Pesticides Pesticides have made great strides from scientific research. A pesticide is a substance that controls pests. A pesticide can be a chemical or biological control.

Biological control Biological control involves using living organisms to control pests.

Insecticide An insecticide is a chemical substance used to control insect pests.

Advancements in Ag Science Cloning and genetic engineering are being used in plant production and improvement.

Cloning Cloning is making two or more organisms out of one using tissue.

Genetic Engineering Genetic engineering is artificially changing the genetic makeup of an organism.

New Avenues for Production New developments with fish have created a new area for agriculture, called aquaculture.

Robotics Computers are used to operate robots. A robot is a machine that can do various tasks. The robot receives its instructions from a computer which has been programmed a certain way.

Precision Farming Precision farming is an information- and technology-based crop management system. It takes into account differences in the needs of crops in specific sites within a field. Check out John Deere’s Farm Forward video!!!!!!!!!

Precision Farming!

Review/Summary Explain agricultural technology. Describe technology as it relates to machinery, plants, and animals. Describe the role of computers in agriculture/horticulture. Explain precision farming and its impact on agriculture.

The End!
