Presentation transcript:

Learning Target: I can successfully compare and contrast two poems. Do Now: Which version of “The Chimney Sweeper” did you like better? Explain your choice in 2-3 sentences!

Comparing and Contrasting When comparing and contrasting two poems, it is important to start asking questions! What is the main difference you see in the poems? Is the difference in the imagery? Diction? Similes? Metaphors?

Comparing and Contrasting Know the background! When comparing and contrasting the two poems, it will be helpful to really understand the background of the poems and inspired Blake. Let’s take a closer look…

Planning your Response Songs of Innocence Songs of Experience

Short Response Question Directions: Write a response to the following question. In your response, be sure to: cite evidence from the texts to support your response use transition words and phrases Compare and contrast the two poems by analyzing the literary elements/devices Blake uses.

Short Response Template Both Blake poems reflect on the subject of _________________ (what the poems have in common). Despite these similarities, their use of (diction, imagery, point of view, tone)_____________________are quite different. Whereas in the first poem, Blake (employs, projects, uses, develops, creates)_______________ _______________in order to advance the idea that_______________________ (overall meaning – theme, tone, characterization, purpose), in the second poem he (employs, projects, uses, develops, creates)_____________________to support the theme/tone/purpose of ______________________________.

Sample Poetry is often a great way to describe a difficult situation. Both Blake poems reflect on the subject of child labor in England and use imagery to show the harsh conditions. Despite these similarities, “The Chimney Sweeper” from Songs of Innocence uses diction to support the idea that children who do all of their work go to heaven. In the poem, the speaker says… “…” (Analysis/discussion. However in Songs of Experience, Blake uses mood to show the reader how difficult the time was. “…” (analysis/discussion). Concluding sentence
