Today’s Title goes onto Page 3 Today’s Title: Map Skillz Today’s Date: August 30th, 2018 Today’s Essential Question (Goes on the top of Page 3): What are the basic features and functions of a map? How and why do we use maps today?

Map Skills/ Geography 6.G.2- Apply the tools of a geographer to understand the emergence, expansion and decline of civilizations, societies and regions.

Map Skills Today we will be learning more about a valuable skill we will need for this year and the rest of our lives… the ability to read a map. All maps have certain things on them that help us find out more information about an area. There are a few important things we always need to look for in order to understand what the map shows.

What do you see on this map that might be important for us to understand or notice?

Scale Represents the distance between two locations on the map. Ex: 1 inch on the map equals 1 mile on the ground

Map Key A small chart included on a map that gives descriptions of what symbols are used and what they stand for. Some maps call the “key” a “legend” instead. Both words mean the same thing.

Symbol A picture that is used to represent an object on a map

Can you understand this legend?

Age Expectancy Legend Without the key or legend, we wouldn’t know what the colors on this map represent. Without the title, we wouldn’t know what the map is showing us.

A design on a map that shows directions Compass Rose A design on a map that shows directions

Cardinal Directions The four major compass points of North, South, East, West used to navigate a map

Intermediate Directions The in-between compass points of Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
