English Language: Paper 2 – Section A PERSPECTIVE READING Q2: Comparative Summary

Question 1 Recap Read Source 3, and find the 4 true statements below: Two carriages did not go over into the stream There were two ladies in the carriage with Dickens The young lady screamed. The old lady said “My God!” Two old ladies were in the carriage with Dickens Only one carriage did not go over into the stream The old lady screamed. The young one said “My God!” Dickens told the ladies to be quiet and calm down.

Question 2 – Comparative Summary 8 marks – spend about 10 minutes answering this question Use both Source A and B to answer the question. Q2 requires you to discuss either the similarities and differences between the two texts - they are looking for a summary and your ability to find comparison points. Provide evidence and inference, but do NOT analyse language. Aim to write about 2 Comparative PEE Paragraphs.

INFERENCE, COMPARISON & SUMMARISING SKILLS Inference Skills Comparing Texts Understanding How to Summarise Finding & Selecting Information to Summarise Techniques for Writing a Summary Student Resources English  Mr Kempner  Year 11  Perspective Reading Watch the GCSEPod Note down the relevant & necessary information in bullet-point form Present your findings on a new Word document E-mail the document, naming the document after the video you were assigned  dkempner@canons.harrow.sch.uk

COMPARATIVE CONNECTIVES In contrast… . Contrastingly, Similarly, on the other hand, whereas, in opposition,

Q2 MARK SCHEME LEVEL DESCRIPTORS Level 4 Perceptive, detailed Offers perceptive interpretation of both texts Synthesises evidence between texts Selects judicious range of quotations from both texts Level 3 Clear, relevant 5-6 marks Begins to interpret both texts Demonstrates clear connections between texts Selects relevant quotations/ references from both texts to support response Level 2 Some, attempts 3-4 marks Attempts some inference from one/ both texts Attempts to link evidence between texts Selects some quotations/ references; not always supporting (from both texts) Level 1 Simple, limited 1-2 marks Shows simple awareness of difference(s) Offers paraphrase rather than inference Makes simple or no links between texts Simple reference or textual details from one/ both texts

Q2 Use Source 1, about the Paddington Rail Disaster in 1999, and Source 3, the account of a Victorian Rail Disaster to answer the question. Write a summary of the differences in the viewpoints of the rail disasters each article describes.

DIFFERENCES IN VIEWPOINTS Point 1 & Quote Experiences of those involved? Point 2 & Quote Feelings of those involved? Point 3 & Quote After the crash, how do each react to it? Text 1 The article is written by a journalist not present at the crash, interviewing the parents of a victim: “Neither could even imagine that their 25-year-old daughter might have been on board.” Text 3 Charles Dickens was a victim of the crash and can give a first-hand account: “I stumbled over a lady lying on her back… with the blood streaming over her face.”

EXEMPLAR PARAGRAPH 10 minutes In Source 1, the main viewpoint described is of the parents of one of the victims of the crash. The article remarks that “neither could even imagine that their 25-year-old daughter might have been on board.” Therefore their viewpoint of the crash is, at first, much more detached and less specific. In contrast, the writer of Source 3 is directly involved in the train crash, showed in the graphic detail of his description: “I stumbled over a lady lying on her back… with the blood streaming over her face.” Write a Comparative PEE Paragraph to complete the answer. Directly compare the two sources in each paragraph, and infer if necessary. 10 minutes

SWAP & MARK Annotate the response Award a mark out of 8 using the mark scheme

Q2 Read Source 4, in which Florence Nightingale describes caring for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War. Compare this to Source 2, about the modern state of Nursing. Refer to both sources. Write a summary of the differences in the writers’ attitudes to nursing. Remember: 2 x Comparative PEE Paragraphs Quotes from both texts Inference linked to the question. Mark this for next week.
