Taking Responsibility for You Experiential Learning Technology

Take the knowledge you have gained from this unit and BLEND it all with the following LIFE SKILLS for a wonderful recipe of RESPONSIBILITY! Experiential Learning Technology

Assertiveness Life Skill The ability to stand up for what you believe is right and healthy and respond in a very confident and nice way! Experiential Learning Technology

HOW people ARE assertive: They move closer to the other person They look them right in the eyes They say something positive first They respond quickly They are confident but say it nicely They keep a low voice tone They know what they want to say ahead of time They thank them for listening at the end Experiential Learning Technology

Model this Life Skill In groups of 2 practice any health-related situation using this skill Experiential Learning Technology

The Communication Life Skill This skill allows you to communicate more effectively by letting them know how you feel and stating what you want/need: I feel…..(share a feeling) When…..(Share the behavior causing your feelings) Because…(how it effects you) Then, either: Would you consider… I’d like… I want… Always thank them afterwards! Experiential Learning Technology

Model this Life Skill In pairs practice this skill using any health-related situation you know or may be dealing with Experiential Learning Technology

The Refusal Life Skill Allows you to say “no” and still keep your friends, stay out of trouble and still have fun! Ask Questions Think about your decision-5 ?’s Is it healthy? Is it safe? Is it legal? Does it respect myself and others? Does it respect the wishes of my parents/guardians? If you answer no to any one of these questions, you probably should NOT do it. If you do anyway, you better be ready for the consequences! State only one consequence and repeat it Sell an alternative Walk away but “leave the door open” Experiential Learning Technology

Model this Life Skill In pairs create a situation( real or imaginary) where you could use most , if not all, of the steps in the refusal skill Experiential Learning Technology

Remember: equals an EMPOWERED PEER! KNOWLEDGE plus LIFE SKILLS Experiential Learning Technology

Challenge: Use what you now know Use the life skills you now have Practice in REAL life scenarios! Now let’s try some real tough ones…. (Mature middle school students KNOW how to handle these situations!) Experiential Learning Technology
