Frankston Train Line History Opened to Mordialloc in 1881, Frankston in 1882 1881 opening at Bridge Hotel with Tommy Bent in attendance, wilderness and swamp on the frankston side of the Mordialloc Creek 4000 hectare Carrum Carrum Swamp many piers, restricted access, Drained in 1868-1870 Mordialloc a holiday resort, for Melbourne, residents often lived in garages and rented houses out for holiday visitors from Melbourne
Frankston Train Line History continued Other stations established gradually – Carrum original station, with Chelsea 1907, Aspendale (horse racing) and after ww1 Edithvale and Bonbeach Edithvale was settled before this but considered part of Aspendale Line electrified in 1922-23 Now part of busy Frankston line with beach popular and other destinations including Mornington Peninsula Edithvale link with other suburbs by Springvale/Edithvale road
Opportunities to discuss at panel Local heritage and history even if not on heritage register, hard to do Many properties left off at stage 2 of study and given local government heritage protection only including a possible Burley Griffin built house in Fraser Avenue, Edithvale “The Pines” With work of Edithvale groups including train station group, collective, and other opportunity to promote knowledge of past development and include young people in this project. Local people can then be more involved in community activities and walking/bicycle tours now and into the future
