Energy and motion Ms. Pici 2016-2017

Flashback to childhood For each playground item, tell what it is, the action you perform to it and the reaction it has as a result.

Speed and motion Define MOTION: A change in position.   Define SPEED: The rate of motion (distance per time).

Speed that doesn’t change There are 3 kinds of speed: Real Life Example Kind of Speed Definition You set the “cruise control” on your car at 55 mph so you don’t get pulled over.   Constant Speed Speed that doesn’t change You glance down at your speedometer to see how fast you are going now because the policeman just used his radar gun to “clock” your speed. Instantaneous Speed Speed at a given moment You traveled to your friends on your bike. They live 5 miles away and it took you 50 minutes to get there. Average Speed S = Distance Time S =

FORMULA FOR CALCULATING AVERAGE SPEED Graphs showing speed are very common. What two variables are need to create a speed graph? Time and Distance   Which is the independent variable and should be plotted on the x- axis? Time Which is the dependent variable and should be plotted on the y- axis? Distance

Graphing Speed Graph the TIME (on the x) and the DISTANCE (on the y) data. Make sure to include axes labels, an appropriate scale, plot points, a line, and a good title.

Using the formula R = D divided by T, calculate the speed and round to the nearest tenth TIME (hour) DISTANCE (miles) 1 4 2 8 3 12 16 5 20

0.0 mph 4.0 mph 4.0mph TIME (hour) DISTANCE (miles) SPEED (MILES/HOUR) S = d/t 0.0 mph 1 4 4.0 mph 2 8 4.0mph 3 12 16 5 20

Questions about the graph Was this car travelling at a constant speed? How do you know? Predict the distance this car would travel in 10 hours. How did you get your answer?

Answers to graphing questions Was this car travelling at a constant speed? Yes How do you know? Linear; straight line = slope Predict the distance this car would travel in 10 hours. 40miles How did you get your answer? S = (20)(2) or 4 x 10 = 40 miles
