The Balkans – Powder Keg Ottoman Empire was in rapid decline. New nations- Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro , Romania and Serbia. Strong nationalism in these countries.

Assassination Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is shot on June 28, 1914. Gavrilo Princep, a 19 year-old member of the Black Hand. Black Hand was a secret society committed to rid Bosnia of Austrian rule.
