How are proteins made from the DNA sequence? Protein Synthesis How are proteins made from the DNA sequence? Starter: Make a revision card on DNA – structure, bases etc. How many proteins can you name?!

Spelling Test

Learning Outcome Briefly outline how protein synthesis takes place. Name the main location for protein synthesis in a cell Explain why a copy of a gene needs to carry the genetic code to the cytoplasm

Think – Pair – Share How are proteins made ? HINT – think back to polymers / monomers/ digestion?

Proteins These are made of Amino Acids ( monomers) joined together to form a long chain. Each Amino Acid has a 3 base code.

Table of Amino acid codes. (triplet code) Table of Amino acid codes. (triplet code). What do you notice about these bases?

How many amino acids are coded for here? T A G Making DNA. How many amino acids are coded for here? C A T C T A G G

But WHY do we have to make RNA? G Making RNA. But WHY do we have to make RNA? C A T C T A G G Task: work out the code for the mRNA and use the Amino acid codes to work out the combination of amino acids.

Protein synthesis – how it happens. What key words do you think will come up as I explain this? 1) Watch this video and make some notes on what happens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC2UV80PZpg

Check point Why is mRNA used instead of DNA ? 1) It is more accurate. 2) It is attractive to amino acids 3) It is small enough to leave the nucleus

Task Complete the cut and paste to show the stages of protein synthesis.

Key Word Task Match the definitions to the key words. Use the key words to describe the process of protein synthesis in your own words. (6 marks)
