Focus: How will dialogue help us improve our writing piece?

Focus: How will dialogue help improve our writing piece? Take 5 minutes and look through your independent reading book. Look for any dialogue and write down what you notice about it.

Rules for writing dialogue! 1. Use quotation marks to show exactly what the person is saying. ex: "Call me later," said Joe.

2. Place ending periods and commas inside the end quotation mark. ex: Mark said, "I want a monkey for my birthday."

3. Place proper punctuation at the end of a sentence. ex: "What do you want to do today?" Mike asked.

4. Begin a new paragraph every time a new person is speaking.

Dialogue does not have to be written separately from the text. Sample from The Scar “You oughta be happy you even got hot food! You hear me? Happy!” It got so that whenever he looked at me with his eyes spitting venom, I’d back away saying nervously, “I’m happy Daddy!” The father is speaking in the first line. We begin a new paragraph because a new person begins speaking, the speaker. The second paragraph, tells part of the story and includes the dialogue. When we write part of the story with the dialogue, it makes our writing more interesting. We can write about the character’s feelings, actions or thoughts.

5. Capitalize the first word of what the person says. ex. Kim responded, "Do you love that color too?"

Turn and Talk How can we correct the dialogue? 1. peggy said i have two cats do you have any pets 2. i have two cats said peggy do you have any pets
