DISCOVER WHAT POWERS CHANGE

Change has considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful, change is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful, change is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident, change is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better. --King Whitney, Jr.

We are faced with a huge variety of environmental challenges ranging from dwindling water supplies to climate change. Corporations, governments, environmental interest groups and citizens all want to see change. Commexus specializes in helping meet those challenges and foster positive and lasting change.

Change is sometimes desirable, often confusing or possibly a little frightening but always inevitable. When an organization seeks to promote behaviour change, specifically environmental behaviour change, they often look for a single key that will unlock that door. Nothing Endures But Change.... HERACLITUS

Many people believe that what powers change is technology. If we create a low flush toilet, a more efficient boiler, a low energy consuming device, a better air filter or some other technology we will automatically have powered forward to an improved environment. But in reality, technology has been proven to be only marginally effective in powering change.

SOME PEOPLE SAY CHANGE COMES FROM LEGISLATION, LAWS, REGULATIONS, POLICIES …fear of fines, poor public image, firing, and other negative outcomes makes legislation the answer to environmental good behaviour. However in the real world regulations have proven to be only somewhat effective in powering change.

So then how do we move from where we are now to where we want to be? What powers lasting, effective and positive environmental change?

Technology alone cannot power change. It plays a role, but cannot stand alone. You cannot legislate change. Some people will be motivated by laws, but not everyone. In fact the true solution to environmental behaviour change is both simpler and more complex. People power change. Thats simple. The complexity comes in persuading them to move towards accepting, adopting and acting on the change. People alone power change.

We can legislate, offer tools and technologies, but in the end people must choose change. We need to make it easy for people to accept, adopt and act on change. People dont resist change, they resist being changed.

Commexus Inc. Commexus Inc. has been assisting organizations and communities to enact environmental change for more than 20 years.
