Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation What do we know about this man named “Paul”? Observation: 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Gospel of God, Interpretation: Five key words describe Paul: servant called apostle set apart Gospel Let’s look more closely at these five key descriptive words. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation Observation: 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, Δοῦλος = doulos = a (male) slave (bondservant) 1401 doúlos (a masculine noun of uncertain derivation) – properly, someone who belongs to another; a bond-slave, without any ownership rights of their own. Ironically, 1401 /doúlos ("bond-slave") is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ's authority as His devoted followers. Interpretation: Paul was a voluntary servant (slave) of Jesus Christ for life. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation Observation: called κλητὸς = klētos = called, invited, summoned by God to an office or to salvation. In the NT, 2822 /klētós ("divinely called") focuses on God's general call – i.e. the call (invitation) He gives to all people, so all can receive His salvation. God desires every person to call out to Him and receive His salvation (1 Tim 2:4,5). "Unfortunately, many choose not to – but all can; all don't but all can call out to God for His mercy (not just 'some')" (G. Archer). See 2821 /klēsis ("calling"). Interpretation: Paul was called by Jesus Christ (directly, Acts 9:1-22) to both salvation and to an office (Apostle). May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation Observation: to be an apostle, ἀπόστολος = apostolos = a messenger, an envoy, a delegate Cognate: 652 apóstolos (from 649 /apostéllō, "to commission, send forth") – properly, someone sent (commissioned), focusing back on the authority (commissioning) of the sender (note the prefix, apo); apostle. Interpretation: Paul was called directly by Jesus Christ (Acts 9:1-22) to be one sent by Jesus Christ on His behalf to communicate His message and to do His work. Apostle: Matthew 10, Mark 6:7-13, Luke 10:1-23 May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation Observation: set apart ἀφωρισμένος = aphōrismenos = separate, place apart 873 aphorízō (from 575 /apó, "separated from" and 3724 /horízō, "make boundaries") – properly, separate from a boundary, i.e. a previous condition/situation (note the prefix, apo). Interpretation: Paul was permanently separated from Paul’s previous life and work directly by Jesus Christ to do the will of Jesus Christ for the rest of Paul’s life. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Romans 1:1-6 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation Observation: for the Gospel of God, εὐαγγέλιον = euangelion = the good news, the gospel the good news of the coming of the Messiah, the gospel; the gen. after it expresses sometimes the giver (God), sometimes the subject (the Messiah, etc.), sometimes the human transmitter (an apostle). Interpretation: Jesus Christ called Paul directly to be His servant for life, to be sent out to the world as a personal envoy of Jesus Christ to spread the Good News about God, His Righteousness, and the Way He made for man to be made right again with God: Jesus Christ. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Acts 7:54 - 8:3, 9:1-22 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation What else do we know about “Paul”? Observation: Acts 8:3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Interpretation: ἐλυμαίνετο = elymaineto = ravage, harry, devastate Saul (his original name) was a radical persecutor of Christians. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Acts 7:54 - 8:3, 9:1-22 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation What else do we know about “Paul”? Observation: See Acts 9:1-22 Interpretation: Saul went from a radical persecutor of Christians to a radical preacher of the Gospel because of a personal direct encounter with the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ changed Saul’s life completely forever. If Jesus Christ can change this man’s life (Saul) for the better, He can also do that to me / for me. My hope is in Jesus Christ. May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16

Observation & Interpretation Acts 7:54 - 8:3, 9:1-22 (ESV) Observation & Interpretation What else do we know about “Paul”? Saul of Tarsus, born of Jewish parents in the city of Tarsus, Cilicia A “Hebrew of Hebrews” of the Tribe of Benjamin (Philippians 3:4-5) A Roman citizen (Acts 22:28, Acts 16:37-39) Greek by culture (Greek education) (Acts 17:28, Titus 1:12) Taught the trade of tent making as a youth (Acts 18:3) Excelled in his Jewish studies beyond his peers (Galatians 1:14) A Pharisee and a son of a Pharisee (Acts 23:6) Zealous for Judaism (Acts 7:58-83, Acts 26:10-11, Galatians 1:13) Apostle to the Gentiles (1 Corinthians 9:22) Three Missionary Journeys: 1st Missionary Journey, c. 46 – 49 AD (Acts 13 - 14) 2nd Missionary Journey, c. 50 – 52 AD (Acts 15:36 – 18:22) 3rd Missionary Journey, c. 53 – 58 AD (Acts 18:23 – 21:15) May 8, 2018 Romans 1 - 16
